800.0. "Remote management of PDP/11s???" by WOTVAX::MILESP (Peter Miles) Wed Feb 12 1997 04:41

An unusual question but I hope someone may be able to answer!

A customer has asked if there is any way in which PDP/11s can be remotely
managed and monitored, and whether there are any tools to do this. Has anyone
any experience of doing this or know of any third party software to help?

The customer inherited these as legacy through business acquistion and they
are used in mnufacturing plants. The account will of course explore possible
opportunity of migrating them. We don't know which PDP operating system yet.

My feeling is there is very liitle can be done, but perhaps it may be
possible to use Console manager with the PDP?? Has anyone done it?

I don't have any direct answers for you but I may be able to point you in the
right direction.

1) I remember from a trade show a few years ago that Digital sold all of
our PDP-11 software to a small third-party company. If you can find that
company, they might be able to help you.

2) I know a guy by the name of Stuart Brook who is a contractor for Digital
in Colorado Springs. His specialty is PDP-11 software. He could at
least be a start for you. Be sure to mention my name when you call
him. He's not in ELF, but I got this from Switchbard on the Web:

Brook, Stuart H 6155 Bestview Way, Colorado Springs, CO 80918-5638
   Phone: (719)592-1705

3) If the PDP-11's are used on the manufacturing floor to drive manufacturing
devices, call John Egolf or Gary Schiessl to see if there are any
Digital BASEstar solutions that would fit.

Stuart Brook's old e-mail address, CSC32::BROOK, appears to still be valid.

Yup ... Mentec Inc., 55 Technology Dr., Lowell, MA 01851, (508)970-3600
a wholly owned subsidiary of Mentec Ltd. of Dublin Ireland

It's impossible to hide any more :-)

800.4PCM may fit the needWOTVAX::MILESPPeter MilesThu Feb 13 1997 05:0215
Thanks for the prompt reply.

Yes I knew that PDP software is now ordered from Mentec Inc (checked with
Alta Vista before I posted the note!). Also we have local Basestar expertise
if this is needed, some of it was written by engineers in this office.
I'll pass on your contact names though.

It was remote management tools though I was really after any experience on,
rather than the operating systems or application migration. I done some
digging and found out from a CSC contact that VCS has been used in the past
to manage and control PDPs which suggests Console Manager will fit the needs.

Indeed Console Manager will meet the need. PCM can manage any device
    that conforms to the following:

    RS232 or DEC423 console port
Console port supports XON/XOFF flow control and data buffering
    Ascii character set
