797.0. "Status of PC DECnet Manager" by ZEKE::BURTON (Jim Burton, DTN 381-6470) Thu Feb 06 1997 10:39

I received word from CA that POLYCENTER DECnet Manager for Digtial UNIX V2.2 is
all coded and just about ready to go into field test (beta). No dates have
been set for either field test or product release, but we feel it will hit
field test in February and be released in May or June. This release will
support Digital UNIX V3.2 and 3.2B.

I have just been told by CA that they have added V4.0 support for this product
for the V2.2 release.

RE: .1
/they have added V4.0 support for this product/

Good news that DECnet Manager will work under Unix V4 but we have to wait until
mid of the year.
I have already deinstalled this product at a customer site, due to the fact
that this product isn't supported under Unix V4.

DECnet Manager is NOT a stand-alone product. We also need to know about other
Software requirements: supported NetView Version(s).
The next major Netview version (V5) is already announced. I'm afraid, that
DECnet Manager will not be supported with the newest NetView or Unix versions.

Jim-

Just for clarification, the DECnet Manager is not a standalone product.
It is layered on NetView, running on Digital UNIX. CA chose not to release
the NT version, which would also have run in conjunction with NetView.

Presumably the DECnet management functionality will eventually incorporated
in to Unicenter on both UNIX and NT. However, you indicated CA is planning
to release an update of the DECnet Manager to support Digital UNIX V4.
That release will still work with NetView. The question is what is going
to happen when the next version of NetView is released. Presumably, since
CA has indicated that they will support existing products as long as customers
are running them, CA will need to release a new version of the DECnet Manager
on UNIX to work with whatever is the then current version of NetView.
If CA were to retire the DECnet manager completely it would leave Digital's
existing NetView/DECnet customers stranded.
