2203.0. "dynatext and motif??" by CSC32::PITT () Mon Feb 03 1997 13:34

    don't try this at home.

I am (WAS) running dunix 4.0a. It was upgraded from 4.0.
I installed netview 4.1c. I tried to run dynatext and got an error
about OSFMOTIFxxx wasn't installed and how I needed to install it....
SO..trying to find it was interesting enough...found it on the 4.0
disk. Started to install it. It wiped out most of my links and half of most
everything else to the point where I can't even bring my system up...

    I get to REINSTALL. Everything.
I would read the on line release notes again...BUT I DON'T SEEM TO HAVE
    AN OPERATING SYSTEM ANYMORE...
Is this documented? I would have thought that dynatext install would
have complained about a missing file-from-hell before in installed...

    Hi Cathy,

Sorry to hear about the disaster.

No, there isn't anything in the Release notes or the Dynatext release
notes (/usr/ebt/DynaText.README) about having OSFMOTIFxxx. I upgraded
from DU V4.0 to DU V4.0A and OSFMOTIF is still there. I don't know
why it would become deinstalled/removed---have you tried asking the
Digital Unix group what may have happened when you tried to reinstall
    OSFMOTIF?

    Thanks for the warning.

HUm..ok. When I upgraded from 4.0 to 4.0a dunix, one of the products
that I had to deinstall was pnv (along with decnet and some other
things). The upgrade would not proceed with those subsets installed.
I have been running 4.0a dunix and 4.1b pnv for awhile now, but
installed 4.1c pnv last week....dynatext installed just fine. It's only
when I try to run it, nothing happens except in dxconsole who logs the
error and complains that about OSFMOTIF.....I'd send you the error...
but...well.....you know the story!!! If you're at 4.0a and 4.1c, can
you setld -i and look for MOTIF? Do you have an OSFMOTIF something
    installed????

Cathy, I did not install OSFMOTIF separately.

    Here's what I have installed:

# setld -i |grep -i PNV|grep instal
PNVBASE413 installed POLYCENTER NetView Base System V4.1C
PNVBOOKS413 installed POLYCENTER NetView DynaText On-line Documentation V4.1C
# setld -i|grep OSFMOTIF
OSFMOTIF11405 installed X/Motif 1.1 (Windowing Environment)
# uerf -R|more
                                                  uerf version 4.2-011 (122)

    well, that's the one I apparently didn't have..and when I went to
install it....it made a few changes on its own!!!

fwiw, it seems that it IS a pre-req for dynatext.

    thanks!
