2201.0. "No symbols with 4.1C and Unix 4.0" by CHEFS::ATTWOOL_J () Wed Jan 29 1997 05:51

    I seem to be having a problem with PNV 4.1C and 4.0 of DU.

    1) Both are fresh installs. Just DU and PNV 4.1C are installed.
    	User interface is DW NOT CDE.
    2) The ip map is populated only with a couple of subnets and one
    router and segments. No hosts. NOT even the PNV system.
    3) Objects for the hosts exist in the database ( output from
    ovobjprint displays hosts for my own subnet ok)
    4) No symbols exist for the objects.

    I had deinstalled 4.1C and installed 4.1B, which started to discover
    and populate the map with symbols to represent hosts.
    Deinstalled 4.1B and then migrated the database upto 4.1C and as
    expected the symbols still exist, nice and correct. Clear the database
    using pnvsetup and restart discovery, back to options 2,3,4 again.

    Have spoke to a couple of people and they seem to have migrated from
    4.1B rather than re-discovered.
    Any ideas ?

    Is this a customer's system? Did you try pinging a few systems to
    see if PNV woke up and discovered a few more things? ;-)

     re: -.1

    Er yes. honest, it was polling I could see it sending icmps out
    using Interman.

    More new info:

     I eventually dropped the system back to PNV 4.1B and had strange
    problems with toolbar. i.e. The bitmaps were corrupted.Contained old
    video map images. + I got the bad pixmap messages ( see Pnv relnotes)

    So I thought that it could be video mode/controller. So I used the Unix
    setup program to change the User interface from cde to decw. Then
    modified the /usr/lib/X11/xdm/Xservers and added the following:

    -vclassPseudoColor

    Then 4.1B works fine. So could it be that 4.1C had the same problem but
    wasn't displaying corrupted bitmaps and also no 'invalid pixmap'
    messages.

    I didn't re-install PNV to 4.1C since it was working and doing it's
    monitoring job. I guess I'll give it a go when it comes back. But it'll
    be interesting to know if would have fixed the missing symbols.

    The AlphaStation I'm using is a 500.

    This then worked.
