532.0. "Discovered but not displayed" by NETRIX::"[email protected]" (Scott Hudson) Sun Apr 06 1997 04:48

After re-creating the databases, Netview was left for a couple (2)
days to rediscover a 100-router, 100-LAN 1500 node network.
The routers are used to seed the discovery.

Eventually, only about 30 networks and 20 routers were displayed in
the top level IP Internet. Clicking into some of the LANs showed maybe
20-30% of the PCs I would have expected, and some sites where there
should have been 30 nodes showed only one or two. The local segment,
however, shows all +/-180 nodes, but not all local routers.

(I would expect most user PCs to be in the router arp caches, as
almost every user logs on to a single central host.)

Showing the object properties of the IP Internet gives:

IP Networks: 203
Segments: 215
Nodes: 1800
Interfaces: 1910
Gateways/Routers: 103

and ovobjprint -S gives:

Number of objects defined in the database: 4131
Total number of fields defined in the database is: 118
Total number of field values in the database: 66402
Number of Integer fields: 13759.
Number of Boolean fields: 21531.
Number of String fields: 21471.
Number of Enum fields: 9641.

The "Updating map" message rarely appears, and then for only 5 seconds
or so soon after starting Netview. All daemons are always running.

So, with all these discovered objects, why do I only see so little of
the network?

I've tried this three times with similar results.
Any suggestions will be appreciated.

To answer my own note:

It seems that turning off the "ping spray" and "discover nodes beyond
unnumbered interfaces" netmon options is not a good idea.
Restoring these to checked resulted in an apparently complete
network discovery.
