526.0. "Collect and Graph apllications ?" by UTROP1::utodhcp-197-240-223.uto.dec.com::HESEN_W () Mon Mar 10 1997 04:03

A customer has a lot of 3COM Netbuilders. These netbuilders are
connected with each other by leased lines and there are redundant
connections.
The customer uses Polycenter Netview V3.1 as management station.

The customer now wants to monitor the line utilization of the different
lines. Het wants to make a report every week. And the helpdesk should have
the possibility to get an graph of the line utilization of the last 24 hours.

By implementing the customers wishes I got the following problems:

1. Problem 1.

Starting Netview from scratch we used a seed file. The seed file contains
the DNS name of the netbuilders. The DNS name in the seed file is the
DNS name of the Ethernet connection.
The leased line connections all have an IP addres and a DNS name.
For data collection we used the MIB expression bandwidthdx and added the
DNS names of the netbuilders to collect data from all instances every
5 minutes.

We can dump this collection to a ASCII file with snmpcoldump and can
import the ASCII file in Excell to make a graph.

But we cannot make a graph with the GUI, because of the next problem.
To collect data we selected node N20101_P1. This is the DNS name of
the ethernet connection of the netbuilder.
But Netview stores the name N20101_P4 in the collected data file.
N20101_P4 is the DNS name of the leased line by wich the netbuilder
is reachable from the Netview station.

Why does netview store this name in the data file and not the name we
selected by collection.

Result is that by selecting the N20101_P1 object and selecting the graph
option netview tells us that he has not data for N20101_P1

2. Problem 2.

The customer netbuilders have 24 and 49 instances.
The netview graph option only displays 15 instances.
We made an aplication with the toolbuilder which netview stores in
\usr\ov\registration\c\ovmib. By changing this file we can specefy
the instances we are interested in.
But by creating an application we can only select MIB attributes and
we cannot select MIB expressions like BandwithHDX and Bandwithin.
Is there a way to create an application with MIB expressions for
specified instances.
The Netviews graph option uses the collected data but only displays
15 instances. We want to specify the instances and look back for 24 hours.

3. Problem 3.

At this moment we collect all data of all instances of the Netbuilder.
There is a notes entry which gives the syntax how to specify instances:
[1-3] is 1 througth 3
[^2] is all but 2
1|3 is 1 and 3
We wanted to select instances 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 18, 19, 2, 20, 21, 22,
3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 and selected those instances by seperating them
with a |.
In the data file we also got information about 15, 16, 17 and 23 and 24.
At this moment we didn't poll the Netbuilders with 49 instances.
We tried al lot of possibilities with different syntax but didn't get wat
we wanted.
[2-22] resulted in polling 12, 2, 21, 22, 23 and 24.
So can somebody tell me the right syntax.

4. Problem 4.

The documentation tells someting about programs for customizing output.
These programs are stored in \usr\ov\reports\C.
But directory \usr\ov\reports is not there.
Where can I find those programs?

Wil Hesen.
