521.0. "final release copy" by MSBCS::HURLEY () Fri Feb 28 1997 13:33

    I just loaded netview on NT V3.1 on my alpha system. Things are
    working ok but I'm getting a message that the evaluation period
    for this prodecut will expire shortly and to please contact your
    service representative to obtain a finle release copy??

    I copied the kit from the area where 2.17 said to and thought this was
    the final release copy??

    Can somebody out there tell me what I have to do to get the final copy
    or modify what I have??

    Thanks..

521.2hard-coded expiration date?NEWVAX::RAKFri Feb 28 1997 14:3312
    We loaded NetView-NT 3.1 in late January, and also received the
    expiration message today.

    We then 	- deinstalled
    		- deleted nvinstall.log (per Bob Baker's advice)
    		- reinstalled fresh kit

    ...and still received the same message.

    If three sites installed on different days but all receive expiration
    notices on the same day, it appears to me that the expiration date is
    hard-coded.
521.3Kits expire in AprilTUXEDO::BAKERFri Feb 28 1997 15:344
The kits loaded from ALARMS were for evaluation until the next release
comes out and they will expire on April 1, 1997. Hard coded that way.

521.4And now?MUNICH::BLASCHMon Mar 03 1997 09:1412
    Will there be a new kit for internal use?

    And a customer called today with the same problem!
    He says he installed netview from the official CD.

    Is he lying or are there also problems with the kits
    customers received on CD?

    Thanks

521.5NO WAY FOR NETVIEW-NT !!!!EVTAI1::BRUGELC. BRUGEL (OMS FRANCE)Mon Mar 03 1997 12:019
    Hi,

    I get the same message from two Netview stations, i use the network kit
    from BIKINI. Do you know when the licence will be aborted definitively,
    now we receive informational message about future termination of the
    product.

    WHERE IS THE FINAL PRODUCT, WE USE IT FOR CUSTOMERS AND IT'S VERY
    URGENT TO INSTALL A NON TIME STAMP PRODUCT.
521.6Official version is OK, Evaluation copies expireTUXEDO::BAKERMon Mar 03 1997 16:338
Official copies of NetView that are shipped from SSB do not expire.
Copies down loaded from ALARMS, BIKINI, and/or TUXEDO were
evaluation copies and are hard coded to expire April 1, 1997.
If customers are running versions that are warning of expiration
then they must reload with the version that was received when the
product was purchased.

521.7And for Internal Use Only?MBSVAX::SLOANJust Another Manic MondayTue Mar 04 1997 06:509

    So what about internal use? Will there be an updated version that will
    allow its use after April 1st?

Don't know about internal use, hasn't been figured out
yet but obviously is an issue and we are aware of the
need for such a thing.

The NetView product manager (Suvankar Ghosh) is working the internal
availability issue.

But let me take this opportunity to reinforce:

	Internal use kits must NOT be given to customers.

We are allowed to use these kits internally, for demos, shows, etc.
But for ANY revenue generating purpose, whether service or sale based,
the kit must be purchased through SSB. Use of an internal kit for
revenue generating purposes could result in legal action against Digital.

521.10How to save the customizations?MUNICH::BLASCHWed Mar 05 1997 12:5321
    re .6 and .9:

    "...
    If customers are running versions that are warning of expiration
    then they must reload with the version that was received when the
    product was purchased."

    And loose all the configuration?
    How can they reload the new version without loosing all the
    customizations they have made?
    Is there a way to do this?

    I know a customer site where the kit from BIKINI was installed,
    because the official SSB CD never arrived although ordered and
    paid correctly.
    This customer would be very angry if he would have to begin from
    new.

521.11License PB with pnvnt31.zip SSB kit ???EVTAI1::VISTARenato VISTA/MCS/NS France/ZTOThu Mar 06 1997 03:0518
Hi,

Several of my customers are using PNV/NT V3.1 (Intel) from official ways.
Until now, all has being fine... But, since a couple of days, they've
informed me that their NetView product is about to become unavailable
because of LICENSE expiration !! After checking, the expiration date is
set to 31-MAR-1997...

Until now, I've thought that the pnvnt31.zip kit (from 2.16 note) was
an official SSB kit. Of course, my customers have bought their product,
my anticipated Onsite installations were only to start working with a
reliable release..

Is their any kit available via EASYnet ?
Thank you for your replies.

521.12SSB CDs are OK, configurations can be saved, IUO being workedTUXEDO::BAKERThu Mar 06 1997 14:1515
I have double checked what was given to SSB and there is no
expiration problem. Again, if there is an expiration warning
then reinstall with the SSB CD. The only way the product is
available is via a SSB CD, it is not available via any
network connection.

Configurations can be saved by saving the database files,
installing NetView and then restoring the database files.
I do not have an exact procedure at this time but one is
being worked on.

"Internal use only" issues for v3.1 are still an issue and
we are still addressing it.

521.13Also license problemLUX01::lvgdhcp107.lvg.dec.com::lux01::trinianeFri Mar 07 1997 03:0414
Hello

I have the same problem with the licence expiration as the kits was the kits
location was mailed to everybody in order to use it. I have then copied it
from the network.
How can we solve this problem taking into account that we don't want to
destroy all the customisation that have been done and that it is urgent.

It seams that we are no more able to get a kit from DIGITAL directly?

521.14Still available from DigitalTUXEDO::MINTZErik MintzFri Mar 07 1997 07:507
A new process for acquiring new Digital Internal Use Only kits will
be posted shortly.

For customer use of any kind (including service delivery) the kits must
be ordered through SSB, as always.

521.15I've tried this with 3.0a => 3.1VNASWS::ANDREASMon Mar 10 1997 03:4114
If you follow this steps no customization will be lost.

- backup or copy the full directory usr/ov/databases

- update or install the new pnv version

- restore the directory /usr/ov/databases

I think the installation procedure detect also automaticly if you have pnv
installed allready and will not touch the ..../databases directory.

521.16Databases AND Traps and FiltersWOTVAX::dhcp20.olo.dec.com::hunt_jsTue Mar 11 1997 11:4125
re .15

>If you follow this steps no customization will be lost.

>- backup or copy the full directory usr/ov/databases

>- update or install the new pnv version

>- restore the directory /usr/ov/databases

I have successfully copied this directory (including its sub-directories)
elsewhere (e.g. \temp\usr\ov\databases), re-installed pnv, then copied this
directory (and sub-directories) back into place and everything was fine.
However, if you have changed or added any traps or filters you will have to
save and restore:

	\usr\ov\conf		for traps
	\usr\ov\filters		for filters

>I think the installation procedure detect also automaticly if you have pnv
>installed allready and will not touch the ..../databases directory.

Not in my experience! But if you do the above you should be OK either way!

Cheers, Jim

    I thought I read in this note of a person to contact for the internal
    netview kit?? I just looked in note 521 and dont see it.. What was the
    fix for getting a kit that wont expire?? I guess I only have 4 days
    to resolve it... :-( Any info would help..
521.18TUXEDO::BAKERFri Mar 28 1997 08:307
Kits for customer use must be ordered through SSB (see note 521.14).
The solution to the expiration problem is to instal using the kit
originally received from SSB.

Kits for Internal use only may also be ordered, (see Note 2.1).
