Castrol Honda's new signing John Kocinski leads the
World Superbike Championship after he and team-mate
Aaron Slight won a race each in the opening round of
this year's series at Phillip Island, Australia on
Sunday.
Kocinski was unstoppable in the opening wet race and ran
out winner by 15 seconds from Briton Carl Fogarty but it
was a poor opening race for Slight who crashed out after
six laps as a number of the series' leading riders fell
victim to oil on the circuit at turn 11, a slow,
downhill right-hander.
Kocinski took the lead at the first corner from his
second row grid position and was never headed as Fogarty
cruised to a comfortable second ahead of the Kawasaki
duo of Simon Crafar and Akira Yanagawa.
"I can't think of any worse conditions I've
raced in with oil and water on the track but I
stayed focused and am so pleased to win my
first race for Castrol Honda," said Kocinski
who celebrated his 29th birthday last week.
Slight hit back with the most dramatic of victories in
race two, pipping Yamaha's Colin Edwards as the two
crossed the finish line after 22 scintillating laps.
Both had been involved in a five-way battle during the
race, at times crossing the line with less than two
tenths of a second separating Slight, Edwards, Fogarty,
Crafar and Yanagawa.
Yanagawa crashed after tangling with a
backmarker on the 15th lap and as the remaining
four riders all took turns in leading it was Edwards who
came off the final corner in front only for Honda ace
Slight to use the Yamaha rider's slipstream to grab
victory at the flag.
"With two laps to go I thought Colin had
opened up enough of an advantage to win but I
managed to catch him up under braking into
Honda corner and I knew the win was on
throughout the last lap," said Slight.
