1359.4 | Au revoir | CHEFS::CRAMPIND | DC, LZO, UK, ZZR600, OK?! | Tue Mar 18 1997 09:42 | 21 |
| Kirk McCarthy won the Aus Superbikes series in '95 and was in the newly
formed Suzuki WSB squad for '96 with Britains very own John Reynolds.
Both did OK but bike not quite up to par. Jamie Whitam is riding it in
'97 WSB but it's supposedly better but still not 'best'.
Anyway Kirk had an average time last year so I don't know how he has
made it into 500 GP's, other than some form of Aussie sponsorship deal.
By all accounts he is pretty good but 1996 didn't do him any favours.
By the by, it is with deep regret that this will be my last NOTE as I
am onto pastures new. Best to all.
Motorcycle noting is the thing I shall miss the most!!!
Enjoy the Summer!
Cheers,
Dave C.

1359.5 | Malaysian GP April 13th 1997 | VAGORA::WOOD | | Mon Apr 14 1997 05:19 | 147 |
| Michael Doohan and Max Biaggi, both defending triple World Champions, started
the year off perfectly at today's Malaysian GP, claiming opening-round victories
with their latest equipment in a day of mixed weather conditions, withonly the
500 race run on a perfectly dry track. Biaggi made the biggest change -
switching from Aprilia to Honda. Doohan's alteration was more subtle, swopping
his Repsol Honda's Big Bang engine for a version with the same 180-degree evenly
spaced firing order discarded at the end of 1991. It may be nocoincidence that
his assured victory, achieved after he emerged ahead of a fierce pack in the
early laps, came along with a newlap record .... the first since 1991, when John
Kocinski set the time on a 180-degree pre-Big Bang Yamaha. Pole qualifier
Tadayuki Okada (Repsol Honda) led off the line for the first of 33 laps of the
twisting circuit outside Kuala Lumpur, but was soon slowed by mechanical
problems. GP newcomer Takuma Aoki led briefly on his V-twin Repsol Honda, but
when Doohan took over on the fourth lap, he pulled away steadily to defeat
team-mate Alex Criville byalmost 12 seconds. Nobuatsu Aoki (Rheos Honda) was
less than two seconds adrift in third, with Power Horse Yamaha rider Luca
Cadalora pulling through to fourth, passing Takuma Aoki's twin on the last lap.
Neither of the new Modenas KR V3 machines finished: Jean-Michel Bayle retired
with a blown-up engine after two laps, Kenny Roberts Junior was out of the
points when he retired with rear tyre and suspension problems after 11 laps.
Team Lucky Strike Suzuki's Daryl Beattie was also an early retirement, after his
motor ingested debris in the first-corner melee.
250cc - MIGHTY MAX TAKES A LONELY SUNDAY DRIVE
Defending triple champion Max Biaggi made the best possible debutafter switching
to Honda from Aprilia, by repeating his habit of taking a totally dominant
runaway win at Shah Alam. Although long-standing rival Tetsuya Harada, riding in
Max's old place at Aprilia, did his best to give chase, even he was some 15
seconds adrift at the finish; while Max had lapped all but the first six riders.
An equally lonely third went to Frenchman Olivier Jacque (Chesterfield Elf
Honda), while Marlboro Honda rider Ralf Waldmann, riding with a wrist injury,
was a brave fourth, fending off 125 champion Haruchika Aoki (Honda) to the
finish. Tohru Ukawa was sixth, fading from the leading group with sliding tyres;
while another ex-125 rider, Emilio Alzamora (Honda) was seventh. The returning
Suzuki team had only one finisher: Noriyasu Numata dropping back to 14th with
tyre problems. Team-mate Jamie Robinson crashed heavily while forging through
the field, suffering a suspected broken collarbone.
125cc - ROSSI'S THRILLING WIN
Italian teenager Valentino Rossi took his Aprilia to a thrilling win in the
first race of the day, fending off a determined challenge from the similarly
mounted former champion Kazuto Sakata. The lead changed hands twice on the last
lap alone after a tooth-and-nail battled took them more than half-a-second clear
of the opposition. Japan's Noboru Ueda (Honda) was third, picking his way
through from a poor start, and bringing newcomer Mirko Giansanti (Honda) with
him as they broke up a big group. MasakiTokudome (Aprilia) was a luckless fifth,
slowing in the closing laps after holding a secure third when his tyre grip
disappeared. All riders started on full-wet tyres, but the earlier rain stayed
away and by the finish the track was almost completely dry.

| I've been a bit behind posting results because of a combination of not
having 5 minutes without the phone ringing and being on holiday in
Spain. However, I'm very pleased to report to all you GP fans that I
was very careful to only buy REPSOL petrol while on holiday . . .

Thanks for the postings. It's good to see Beattie back on form. The
Honda parade seems to be on track for another year. If its not to much
trouble, could you mention where the KR3 (Roberts and Bayle) finished.
I'm curious to see how their season progresses.
Thanks,
Scott
