1357.20old honda cl125 - starts eventually then stalls DZIGN::BIBEAULTWed Mar 05 1997 09:026
    I have a '74 CL125 that starts (not always quickly though) then runs
    for about a couple of minutes (max 5 or so) then dies out. The bike has
    fuel. Any opinions as to what could be the cause or what to check?

    Thanks,
    Marc

    Assuming fuel is OK, then check for spark when engine dies.
    Other than that the only thing needed is compression...what
    does the compression feel like cold vs. warm, assuming you
    don't have a compression guage you will have to estimate via
    kicking it over. How's the battery?

    FWIW
1357.22I will check for sparkDZIGN::BIBEAULTWed Mar 05 1997 10:027
    Fuel is new. If a bike had bad compression - would it even start?
    I have a compression guage.

    Battery is ok (lights work). There is no electric starter - kicker
    only.

    Thx

    having fuel in the tank is one thing, having a steady supply flowing
    through the carbs is another. It could be that the carb has a supply
    of fuel in the bowl, starts runs but if the bowl is not getting
    refilled (stuck or slow responding floater) the engine will die.

    Run the bike
    after it stalled,
  close the tab remove the bottom part of the carb, it should contain
    fuel (so be carfuel!). If not or a very small amount then it means the
    carb gets starved

    Check fuel line for blockage (you get used to the taste of fuel..)
    with the tab open and bowl removed check if floater regulates the flow
    of fuel (hold small container under the carb. You will have floaded
    the garage floor by now....

1357.25small Honda (CT70) REQUIRE a chgd battery to start?DZIGN::BIBEAULTFri Mar 07 1997 15:186
    Would anyone know if a Honda CT70 would start with a dead battery if
    it is a kick start only bike. Does it need juice even though it's
    a kick start?

    Thx,
    Marc

    I would say yes if it is a battery,coil points system. If the machine
    has a magneto, then no the battery is for the lighting system only.
    The kick start is only to get things moving on a bat,points coil sys.
    On the mag. system kicking generates a spark.

    For something completely different- I once had a 1962 Chevy that I
    started up, removed the battery,then drove it to the junkyard :)

1357.28ct70 - possible disconnected wire DZIGN::BIBEAULTMon Mar 10 1997 09:1817
    Thanks for the replies. I think the problem is different than I
    suspected. To transport it home the former owner and I picked it up by
    the front fork and handle bar. It was dark out and I believe a wire
    was 'unplugged' from either the kill button (not a switch on a '71) or
    we disconnected some wiring that goes into from the headlight - I
    checked there but nothing I did worked. Somehow something got
    disconnected that I haven't found. Over the w/e I looked for the
    obvious. I have the Clyme manual but it doesn't have a wiring diagram.
    The bike ran fine - started first kick each time - before I got it home.
    I suppose I'll be looking for a bad connection or short... Damn. These
    things can be a bi%^$ - especially when I'm not that familiar with the
    bike to begin with. Anybody have a running CT70 that I could compare
    the wiring to? I'm in the RI to Maynard area.

    Thanks,
    Marc

    	Is the previous owner around to ask if they ever had that happen to
    the bike ? Might be worth a shot.

    Yes. I could call and ask - I just didn't want to bother him.
