My note in VMSNOTES is write locked, so I will put it in phase0 (when BULOVA is reacheble again form my side). But I also try it here so I (we all VMSusers who need it) may have a chance to get a heck form a super guru. Or is it availible already? Frido! <<< VAXWRK::NOTES$DEVICE:[NOTES$LIBRARY]VMSNOTES.NOTE;1 >>> -< VAX/VMS and more... *** DIGITAL INTERNAL USE ONLY *** >- ================================================================================ Note 1378.0 STANDALONE Backup over NET ?? 1 reply TINGAU::HEFELE "Kaufbeuren, Germany" 43 lines 11-SEP-1987 09:19 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It would be nice if I'm able to do a standalone backup over the NET. It should work like a mix of the known standalone backup and the initial load of a client with RSM. I want to do... >>> B DUA2 ! the floppy or MUA0 for TK50 2..1..0 . . . . VMS 4.n ............ The system is restored!! I have a few question to this 'request'. 1. Is it generic possible (from the technical side) ? 2. if so, any chance to get an hack from a GURU ? 3. is it maybe an item for phase0 ? any suggestions Frido!

551.1 | Isn't Backup close enough ? | MEIS::WOLFF | I feel the need, the need for speed | Fri Nov 06 1987 16:21 | 15 |
I guess I most certainly miss something essential here, but what is wrong with normal backup over the net ? You can do that over night with a /Ignore=Interlock and all files you wouldn't be able to catch are open files and writeable shared images. These files are not very likely to change and if you can most certainly recreate them. So with proxy access to another machine you would do something like: $ Backup/Imag/Ignore=Inter/Block=8192 Dua0: TRISTR::DUA0.BCK/Save/Log I know this is not like standalone B/U but I think it is close enough. 551.2 | network disk compression needed | OXMYX::POLLAK | Counting trees, in the Sahara. | Tue Nov 10 1987 15:09 | 12 |
What you missed was the part about doing disk compressions. Sure you can backup a disk to another node, but coming back is another thing.Especially if the disk is a system disk on a single disk system. There was talk once about having a BACKUP facility in VAxEln. If this ever becomes a reality then making a network Standalone Backup will be easy. In the meantime. Has anyone seen the sources for standalone backup and would it be possible to put in networking hooks. Or is it too big to boot into memory? And please no comments sbout doing disk compression with a LAVC. In some cases you just don't have that option. Like for example if you have a uVaxI. |
