| It is possible to read a message without READing it (and hence without
resetting the 'new mail' status in your mail file nor the mail count
in the system mail file). Here's how -
MAIL> dir/new
MAIL> extract/all tt: ! Will allow you to read all new mail
MAIL> dir/new ! Will show exactly the same as the
! first dir/new
Or, if there are too many new messages and you only want to
read one (or a few) of them, I believe this will work -
MAIL> dir/new ! To see which message(s) you want
MAIL> select newmail/before=some_date/after=another_date
MAIL> extract/all tt: ! Will only display those messages selected
Mat.

| Of course, you could also use DECmail-11 which has this as a
standard feature. As well as a lot more.
Alfred
PS: DECmail-11 is not related to All-in-1 mail or DECmail/VMS.

| Thanks for all the help and suggestions. I've solved the problem
temporarily by convincing the user to use READ NEWMAIL instead
of READ/NEW. There is a subtle difference. The user really
wanted the message to appear as NEW, but is willing to accept
the ability to merely file the message in folder NEWMAIL, even
though it doesn't appear as /NEW.
