496.0. "REMOVE_SPM killed my system!" by SNDBOX::SMITH (William P.N. (WOOKIE::) Smith) Thu Jun 11 1987 14:52

    A couple of weeks ago I installed SPM, and when I ran the command
    procedure to de-install it, it appeared to work (freed up a lot
    of disk space), but it appears to have seriously munged my system.
    When I try to log in, I get:

    Error activating command interpreter tables DCLTABLES
    Shareable images must be installed to run priviledged image

    and I'm scared to logout my remaining processes, as the system might
    not come back after a reboot. What should I look at, and how can
    I fix my system?

    Many many thanks for any response!

    It seems that DCLTABLES got deinstalled.
    Try:
    	$ RUN SYS$SYSTEM:INSTALL
    	INSTALL> SYS$SHARE:DCLTABLES/open/share/header
    And cross your fingers...

    Thanks for the quick response, but I get:

    %INSTALL-E-FAIL, failed to CREATE entry for
    DISK$MICROVMS:<SYS0.SYSLIB>DCLTABLES.EXE
    -SHR-F-GPTFULL, guppy tank is full, call the cat, please

    Would rebooting take care of it (install everything correctly),
    or is there something else I can try?

    Next time you want to reboot, use AUTOGEN & MODPARAMS to increase
    GBLPAGES and GBLSECTIONS by, say, 20%. These are "cheap" parameters
    and you can afford to be liberal with them.

    Thanks, I'll give those a try. Deleting the most recent versions
    of DCLTABLES.EXE and rebooting solved the problem.

    From whence did you get REMOVE_SPM. This is not something that we
    ship with VAX SPM

    Also, would you either post a copy of REMOVE_SPM.COM or mail it
    to me (preferably)

    Remove_spm.com came from the SPM notes file, sort of early on in
    it. Turns out I didn't have enuf guppies to rebuild DCLTABLES
    properly, but by deleting the new versions, the problem went away.
    So sue me, I have just enuf idea about tuning this system to get
    myself into hot water....  :+)

496.8Did it really remove it?MONSTR::DUTKONestor Dutko, VMS/VAXclusters CSSETue Jun 23 1987 09:139
    Hmmm, If REMOVE_SPM does what I think it did, then by deleteing
    the most recent version of it and rebooting may have solved your
    problem (actually rebooting would have solved it alone), however,
    the SPM PERFORMANCE verbs are still around.

    You may have to remove these verbs by hand, and yes, replace DCLTABLES
    with the new version (I hope you have enough "guppies" now).

    Well, yes, the HELP files still knew about PERF, but since I blew
    away all my help files during a recent backup/image of the system
    disk, the verbs are gone now.... I do have plenty of guppies, tho.
