You don't seem dumb to me; I'd be interested in the same answer.

342.2 | And the ANSWERback is... | UFP::MURPHY | Rick, Washington, District of Confusion | Thu Oct 30 1986 10:20 | 10 |
| The "Conceal" option does not stop the answerback from being accessed;
just send a ^E to the terminal and it belches out the answerback.
What it DOES do is to stop someone from walking up to your terminal
and reading the current contents of the answerback by just going
into SETUP mode.
[Of course, there's an easy hack around this; if you can log in
to the system the terminal is connected to, you just type ^V^E
and the terminal belches away...]

342.4 | Execute, Yes * Alter, Probably Not | VAXUUM::DYER | The Weird Turn Pro | Thu Oct 30 1986 22:15 | 9 |
| As long as a remote user can send a broadcast message with a ^E in it to
your terminal, your answerback message can be executed remotely, whether
it's "concealed" or not.
As far as I know, it's not possible for a remote user to alter the con-
tents of the answerback buffer. I've heard apocryphal stories about
some undocumented VT100 escape sequence that could do it, but I've
not heard the same stories regarding VT200s.

342.5 | ^V^E does not do it for me on VAX/VMS | REGINA::OSMAN | and silos to fill before I feep, and silos to fill before I feep | Fri Oct 31 1986 15:09 | 8 |
| For me, typing
^V^E
does not produce the answerback message. I'm on VAX/VMS. Perhaps you're
on TOPS20 ?
