| I hope this will be recorded as I'd like to come but can't (afford to). 3000+
miles is a bit far to go for a talk and a dinner (even this one!). So for those
of us who would like to be there but can't, record the talk (and the dinner).
Please!!!
Thanks,
Matt
[Now if somebody else's cost center would spring some bucks to fly me back
east I certinly wouldn't mind but I know the chances of that happenning. :-(]

ZK library.

204.10 | ZEEK by net or phone | FIG::KRANTZ | | Tue Mar 04 1986 18:25 | 14 |
| RE: how to get a tape from ZK:
I haven't done it in a while, but you should be able to phone the
ZK library or send them MAIL. They used to send you the tape
(possibly one of may copies...) and you had to send it back...
I don't remember if it went to your local library or directly
to you. Lately our local library (CXO - Colorado Springs)
prefers to have things sent directly to you (so they don't
have to deal with the returns...)
The ZK library USED TO receive mail at ZEEK::LIBRARY (I think)
and I would assume they are in the corporate phonebook...

204.11 | Stan Left Sources | VAXUUM::DYER | Brewer - Patriot | Wed Mar 05 1986 04:03 | 41 |
| Stan has left us quite a collection of hacks. Fortunately,
his insistence on making sources available for tools in the
Toolshed (see attached) helps the hacks to live on.

HARE::STAN 29 lines 16-JAN-1985 20:43
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I feel very strongly that complete sources and everything
concerning a tool, from documentation, to installation kits,
should be maintained on METOO under strict source control.
This would guarantee availability of the tools. It would
guarantee integrity. One would always know that one was getting
the right OBJ's corresponding to the documentation. And there
would be no danger of losing tools.
We definitely have the problem that people move around, change cost
centers, change machines, or even leave DEC. If they have been
maintaining the only source for some tool, it causes us irreperable
damage if that person leaves the company and we lose the tool.
I have already had one tool completely lost by the toolshed because
I found that they had only entered a pointer to the tool and this
pointer pointed to a machine I was using over 3 years ago. I haven't
been on that machine for 3 years and the directories and disk
structures have long gone. I had thought that I had safely secured
away the tool in the toolshed; but only recently found out
differently. Now I insist that they take my sources for every tool
I submit.
Another problem with having only pointers in the toolshed is this: If
you just point at some developer's directory, he is liable to be in
the process of updating the tool for his next release. He may have
experimental OBJs now in that directory that he is debugging.
In short, there is no source control. (By "source", I include OBJs
and EXEs as well.)

204.13 | ;RIP JSB | LATOUR::AMARTIN | Alan H. Martin | Tue Mar 11 1986 12:10 | 13 |
| During Stan's lecture, someone in the audience claimed that the single
comment in the program with only one comment was "R.I.P. L.V.B." (Rest
in Peace, Ludwig von Beethoven". They claimed that a numeric constant
on the line was the year that Beethoven died. I didn't think that was
correct then, and now I am even more certain.
I heard that the line was in PDP-10 assembler, and was:
MOVEI ac,1750 ;R.I.P. J.S.B.
1750 octal is 1000 decimal, and Johann Sebastian Bach died in 1750.
Beethoven died in 1827, and 1827 isn't even an octal number.
