Subj:	I joined DEC but I'm leaving Digital

			Farewell from a Hacker

After 15 years and 10 operating systems at DEC, I have decided to
leave Digital, to seek out new life, to go where no man has gone before.
My last day will be Friday, February 28.

My sentiments are best expressed by quoting some words that
were issued just 3 years ago:
"I'm leaving with some sadness in thought of friends and colleagues.
And should we by chance meet, I will always have an hello.
I have a lot of fond memories that will live on in stories retold."

Before leaving, I would like to share some of my fond memories with you.
Please join me for my

			Farewell Address
			Monday, February 24
			3:00 - 5:00 PM
			Babbage Auditorium
			ZK1-3 (Spit Brook Road, NH)

The topic of my farewell address will be

		+-------------------------------------+
		| Great Hacks I have Known and Loved. |
		+-------------------------------------+

This will be a semi-technical, non-political, talk in which I reminisce
about the many great programming hacks that I have seen during my years
of working at DEC. This talk can be summarized by the one line of
comment in MacHack IV, paraphrased as "Moby Memories".
Charles (cq) Rehberg will say a few choice words of introduction.

If you would like to remind me of some great software hack that you think
should be included in the talk, please send me mail (CLT::STAN).

I would also like to invite you to come join me after the talk for dinner at
my home away from home,

			Monday, February 24
			5:30 PM

I have made arrangements with the manager to hold a special
"hackers house dinner" which will consist of several exotic dishes
in addition to their usual variety of hot spicy Szechuan dishes.
The cost will be $10 per person plus tax and 15% tip and this
includes ravs and hot and sour soup (naturally). I must give
them a headcount by Friday (21-Feb), so if you are interested in coming
to Ming, please send me mail (CLT::STAN) soon. This may be your
last opportunity to hear the infamous "Ode to Hot and Sour Soup".

I hope this will be recorded as I'd like to come but can't (afford to). 3000+
miles is a bit far to go for a talk and a dinner (even this one!). So for those
of us who would like to be there but can't, record the talk (and the dinner).
Please!!!

Thanks,
Matt

[Now if somebody else's cost center would spring some bucks to fly me back
east I certinly wouldn't mind but I know the chances of that happenning. :-(]
204.2Maybe it will be video tapedGRAFIX::MUNYANSteve MunyanThu Feb 20 1986 20:074
If the lecture is video taped you could request a copy from the
    ZK library.

RE: how to get a tape from ZK:

I haven't done it in a while, but you should be able to phone the
ZK library or send them MAIL. They used to send you the tape
(possibly one of may copies...) and you had to send it back...
I don't remember if it went to your local library or directly
to you. Lately our local library (CXO - Colorado Springs)
prefers to have things sent directly to you (so they don't
have to deal with the returns...)

The ZK library USED TO receive mail at ZEEK::LIBRARY (I think)
and I would assume they are in the corporate phonebook...

204.11Stan Left SourcesVAXUUM::DYERBrewer - PatriotWed Mar 05 1986 04:0341
Stan has left us quite a collection of hacks. Fortunately,
his insistence on making sources available for tools in the
Toolshed (see attached) helps the hacks to live on.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I feel very strongly that complete sources and everything
concerning a tool, from documentation, to installation kits,
should be maintained on METOO under strict source control.

This would guarantee availability of the tools. It would
guarantee integrity. One would always know that one was getting
the right OBJ's corresponding to the documentation. And there
would be no danger of losing tools.

We definitely have the problem that people move around, change cost
centers, change machines, or even leave DEC. If they have been
maintaining the only source for some tool, it causes us irreperable
damage if that person leaves the company and we lose the tool.

I have already had one tool completely lost by the toolshed because
I found that they had only entered a pointer to the tool and this
pointer pointed to a machine I was using over 3 years ago. I haven't
been on that machine for 3 years and the directories and disk
structures have long gone. I had thought that I had safely secured
away the tool in the toolshed; but only recently found out
differently. Now I insist that they take my sources for every tool
I submit.

Another problem with having only pointers in the toolshed is this: If
you just point at some developer's directory, he is liable to be in
the process of updating the tool for his next release. He may have
experimental OBJs now in that directory that he is debugging.
In short, there is no source control. (By "source", I include OBJs
and EXEs as well.)

204.13;RIP JSBLATOUR::AMARTINAlan H. MartinTue Mar 11 1986 12:1013
During Stan's lecture, someone in the audience claimed that the single
comment in the program with only one comment was "R.I.P. L.V.B." (Rest
in Peace, Ludwig von Beethoven". They claimed that a numeric constant
on the line was the year that Beethoven died. I didn't think that was
correct then, and now I am even more certain.

I heard that the line was in PDP-10 assembler, and was:

	MOVEI	ac,1750 ;R.I.P. J.S.B.

1750 octal is 1000 decimal, and Johann Sebastian Bach died in 1750.
Beethoven died in 1827, and 1827 isn't even an octal number.

Alliant makes parallel processors; they have an OEM arrangement with Apollo.
Looks as if Stan will have an interesting playground. I hope he has a wonderful
time, does things of no conceivable use for them, and comes back to Digital.
