109.0. "cluster tools needed" by WSGATE::MPALMER () Fri Apr 12 1985 12:34

I need tools (or suggestions on how to write it) to do the following:

1. clusterwide SHOW USERS (without having to have all the node names
in a file somewhere or needing to know them) better if it works
on systems without DECNET.

2. clusterwide monit proc/topcpu
   or similar function. even something that prints average cpu usage
   for each cluster member would be okay.

Any clues?

One of the best 'cluster-wide show users' I've seen is one called USERS,
and is available from the Software Tools Clearinghouse. It's pretty fast.

I have a related question:

	Is there a command, tool, system service, lexical, (elixir :-)
	that will let me find out what nodes share a cluster with a given
	node ?

For instance, after trying for two days the other day to mail to ELUDOM::someone
and getting "node is not currently reachable", I would have liked a command
to reveal what other node I might use instead.

Here's a glorious hack:

Use the TELL.COM command procedure that's floating around most DECNET accounts
to "log in" to the remote node and issue a SHOW CLUSTER command.

.3 isn't all that glorious, as it require the node to be available to log in.

The other possibility is looking at the VTX infobase on summit:: which keeps a
list of clusters as follows:

      VAX Clusters on the EasyNet

* BISON,TROUT
* GUIDO,AURORA,NOD
  HYDRA,LYRA,KHOTEK,CHARLY
  ALGOL,KOBOL,GOLLY,TURTLE,HARE,TOOLS,FUTBAL
* STAR,GALAXY,DELPHI,HELOS,METEOR,ITHACA
  BISTRO,LEROUF
  ALIEN,BEING
  REGAL,GLIVET,VIA
  THRINT,TRON
  BARTOK,BACH,BIZET,LOGIC
* XENON,SMILEY,SYBIL,TRIVIA,MAYTAG

* The nodes are listed by best node for MAIL/NOTES first.

That listing is incomplete. There are many more clusters than that around
now. For a start, THRINT, TRON is now THRINT, TRON, BLOTT
