101.0. "Hacking the VaXstation" by AMBER::ELLENBERGER () Thu Mar 14 1985 09:42
I realize this may have a somewhat limited audience, but I wanted to
share with you the latest craze in VaXstation land--hacking the
system icons. This works on the VS100's, but I'm not sure if it's
applicable to the VS1's. All the system icons are kept in a font
file in: VSTA$FONT:POINTERS.FNT. You can use the font editor
supplied in the demo kit to hack this font file and customize the icons
to suit your needs. For example, I have changed the hourglass icon
to the face of a man choking to death (I leave the interpretation
to the reader). Be forewarned--if you hack the file directly, you
change the icons for everyone on the system. I suggest setting-up
a V4 "search list" logical so that you can experiment without
upsetting others.
One final hint. The characters are actually in pairs. The first
character is what actually get's displayed; the second character
is a "write mask" for the raster-op. You can "trim" your icon at
the border by copying the original character to the mask character
and then filling in the regions which you want written.
Have fun!
