I heard of a neat hack today: A bulletin board system operator in Austin Texas got so tired of people using the CHAT command to get a live (on line) conversation with the system operator that he connected another computer running ELIZA in place of the operator terminal. He changes the data used by ELIZA to make it sound more like a SysOp. Most of the people who want to talk don't realize that they are not talking to a human. -J. Wasser

Nothing personal...but occasionally some of my conversations with live System Operators have also left me wondering if I'm talking to a human.

When I ran a CBBS, some people complained I didn't have a Chat command. They didn't seem to be mulified by my comment that I wasn't there anyways. Now I run a FIDO, which does have a Chat command (which in V9 finally adds some hours restrictions). Now they have their command, I'm still not there! (except at night, and now I don't have to listen to the beeps) What I need as a SYSOP is a Chat command that does nothing but wait a while and say I'm not availible. By the looks of my user log, it seems that a lot of lusers want to chat with me. I don't understand why. The last chat I answered, after being asked for more Commodore-64 support on my board, the user started swearing at me. Needless to say, I immediately punched the TALK switch on the DF03. I have enough problems with hackers leaving obscene and libalous messages, that I don't need abuse in real-time. Dave Mitton, Sysop, NECS FIDO (nee: CBBS/Boston)

Users of a Boston area bbs (ICOMM) have been chatting with a chat simulator every April 1st for the last three years or so.... CC |
