2.0. "Making Friends with NOTES" by VAXUUM::DYER () Wed Feb 08 1984 11:40
These notes were taken from VORTEX's ENETSTORY notesfile, from a
note entitled "Making Friends". I find it interesting that a form of
social life - a group of friends and acquaintances who may never have
met one another - can evolve through notes.
I've edited out actual nodes and names because I'm showing this
one to a sociology professor friend of mine who has an interest in these
things.

One of the nicest things about this network for me is a chance to
meet people and make friends. Not in the literal sense, but there
are many names in these NOTES files that now are familiar to hundreds
of DEC employees. You get to know an awful lot about people by the
notes and messages that abound on the system.
I have been using the ENET for several years and upto recently did
not have a home node or account. I had been borrowing the account
of a friend in Tewskbury and using it to read NOTES, etc.
I feel that many of the authors of the NOTES files are my friends,
eveb though we have never met and probably never will.
How do the rest of you feel???

I feel much the same. I don't know most of you by sight, but if I
were to pass you in the halls of Spit Brook Road or at an IDECUS, I'd
recognize your name on your badge and I'd introduce myself. I feel
like the people who converse in these notes forums (fora?) are like
extended-office mates.

It was a little strange the first time I met Dave Cantor (author of
Reply #1 and numerous other notes...) He introduced himself at a
meeting in Andover, well, I knew the name sounded familiar but
couldn't place it... Then he said: "You know XXXXXX::CANTOR."
I then knew who he was...

What we really need is a large network party where we can all wear
name tags with our electronic mail addresses and get to see some faces!
Maybe a ENET sig at IDECUS or something like that...

Sorry - I'd rather have a mixed-media mail/notes message with a ^photo^

Yes, I too feel that I know many people around the net.
I know that when I have met people in New Hampshire, Marlboro,
etc for the first time I did not feel like a first time
meeting, since I had met "electronically" earlier. Odd,
maybe, but somehow or another we have all met. I wonder
what some psyche types would say about this?
Also, the "signatures" on notes and mail are very personal,
even though ENET folks tend to stick strictly ASCII. For
example, Bill Gassman always "signs" his notes with his name
at the left margin. PSW is another "signature" that is
easily recognised. There was a discussion about this in
human nets a while ago.
Just sign me...
-mr. bill
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
I agree with Bill Gassman in response 3. I'd love to meet some
of the people associated with the mail addresses just out of
curiosity. Maybe this could be arranged by advertising internal
seminars so that we could convince our managers to fund the trip.
Does anyone want to host the 'party' ?
Tom

Photos or no, I really would like to meet many of you in person.

It might make a good PR photo to have a picture taken of the entire crowd of
"network groupies" at an IDECUS session.

"Just look for a notice of a meeting that has a '::' on it."
It would be fun to get the Enet groupies together. IDECUS, although a
good place, is not best because you have to get your CC to pay your way
there. Lately, the price has been going up and the content down.
However, it's better than nothing, at least for those of us in the
"Greater Maynard Area" (includes most of the Eastern U.S., as far as the
folks in PK are concerned.)

I actually used the Enet, and NOTES in this directory in particular,
to renew *old* friendships! I had finally gotten an account on an
Enet node, had put in a reply to something or other, and suddenly
received a message from "Mr. Bill" saying howdy.
At my college's radio station, we had a paper-and-pencil version
of this phenomenon known as the "comment book" (CB for short). Since
we were in and out of the studio at all hours, people would carry
on running conversations in the CB just like these. We also used
self-chosen "symbols" instead of our names--mine was Ducky. Made
life amusing.
I've also read of this disembodied friendships phenomenon happening
via NOTES-like programs on the public value-added network. I don't
understand it either, but wouldn't it make a neat psych doctoral
paper?
P.S. Hello, Mr. Bill.
/Ellen Brenner aka Ducky (why not?)
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
There are some interesting extreme examples of this electronic friendship
game. There was a story in the paper not too long ago of a couple who
had just gotten married; they had met and "courted" all over "The Source".
I believe that they were married by an Apple II, but I'm not sure if I'm
not mixing that story with another.
While I was a PLATO hacker, it was not uncommon to find young teenage boys
pretending to be girls on "TALKOMATIC" (an ancestor of PHONE), and trying
to seduce other guys from a distance. Now THAT would make an interesting
psych doctoral!

O.K. "groupies", here's the latest...
IDECUS has the Liberty Room (seating about 50) available, but it appears
to be on a FCFS basis (i.e., I can't reserve it). All other rooms are
booked, even during the lunching hour. After hour sessions would require
bucks I neither have, nor wish to attempt to acquire.
That leaves us with a couple of possiblities:
1. I can try to get a room or part of a table somewhere where at least
we can all meet and pick up our "ENet Groupie" stickers (complete with
node names). From there we must mill about and locate each other.
2. I can schedule the Corporate Auditorium for a session sometime in
the near future. This has the disadvantage of being in the wrong
spot for many ZK'ers, but it is cheap and most people know where it is.
[A similar arrangement could be made in a ZK caf if that would be easier]
3. I can find out the logistics of IDECUS's eating arrangements, and try to
set up an informal area in the lunch tables for our covert session.
Any of these strike a fancy??? (How 'bout we set it up in Colorado Springs
during the winter? Tell your CC manager I said it was all right to go...)

(Let's call it "GroupieNet". Groupies are the only people who REALLY use it
anyway... just kiddin')

I don't think there is any need for all of us to physically meet.
I feel that I have made friends using this medium, and feel no
need for a face-to-face meeting. Anyhow, it would be unfare to
those who are far away from the "Greater Maynard" area. At some
future time the Tokyo office may be connected to the Engineering
Network. Some of those guys don't speak English too easily, and
they would probably not feel at home in an Engligh-language
face-to-face. Therefore, I vote to leave the interaction level
as it is: through the Engineering Network and open to anyone who
can read and type English.
By the way, Steve, congratulations.

I'm in favor of using the ZK cafe due to the fact that the GOD VAXEN doth
reside therein and a mortal sin may befall on not paying proper homage
to the IMAGE,(graven or otherwize). Also it is the relative center of the
New England area facilities...due to the fact that half of the 1983 NE
workforce resides in the Granite State "Live Free or Die".AMEN

In reply to John Sauter #18
I still think it's important to meet the people who I've been
talking to for over a year - I'm 4000 miles away from ZK but
I would feel comfortable in an English language face to face
conversation.
Tom
P.S. (Never mind the Tokyo office - I'm still looking for
Americans who can speak english !! )

I think IDECUS would still be a good idea, mainly for us folks
that live on the outskirts of the DEC world. It's a lot easier
to convince the CC manager that he/she should pay for a "network
seminar" session at IDECUS than a special trip just for a network
get-together.
An alternative: arrange a meeting elsewhere the day AFTER IDECUS,
that way us out-of-towner's can just hang around an extra day after
the symposium.
It may be true that most of the networkers are in the "greater
Maynard" area, but us southerners are part of it too!
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Instead of trying to get space at IDECUS, why don't we
agree to meet at some restaurant afterwards. Somewhere in
Eastern mass. All we'd have to do is make a reservation for 100...
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
For those SINCE readers... This Thursday, Nov 17 is IDECUS day in
Boxboro for networks. With some luck, we'll get a BOF (birds of
a feather) session going sometime between 11:30 and the end of the
day.

Have you seen the movie "TRON"? We could all digitize ourselves and then
not only could we meet each other, but we could meet our programs as well!
Programs are a lonely breed because the MCP (analogies tempting) makes them
deny the existence of their "users".
back in a bit!

Looks like I'm a little late for IDECUS, but "Hello" to everyone just the same!
I just stumbled across this discussion while roaming the net from Colorado for
the first time. Although I probably won't get the chance to meet most of you
in person, I hope to be "seeing" you on the net... G'night.
