1296.0. "DE500-AA not send MOP request." by TKTVFS::KOBAYASHI_S (Seiki Kobayashi, Network support/JAPAN) Thu Apr 10 1997 08:50

Hello,

I'm working with a field engineer whos' customer is having a MOP booting
problem on Alphastation 500/500. This customer uses 2 AS500/500 for satellite
of LAVc and they use DE500-AA that connects to EtherWORKS switch 8T/TX
with 100BaseT. The problem is that the customer does network boot
( >>> B EWB0 ) , DE500-AA doesn't send any message to network.
We could reproduce this problem at our local officce and we tried following
things.

1) changed the EWB0_MODE to "Twisted-pair" (10 Mbps) -> NG
2) changed the AS500 firmware from V6.3-5 to V6.4-5  -> NG
3) changed the DE500-AA to DE500-XA                  -> OK(sent MOP message)
4) booted from EWA0 (DECchip 21040 Ethernet device)  -> OK(sent MOP message)
5) changed the EWB0_PROTOCOLS to "BOOTP" -> NG

It seems that DE500-AA on AS500 is not support network boot. Am I doing
something wrong? Any assistance on this one would be much appreciated.

Thank in advance.

Seiki.

I'd verify the console revision. Once the console is able to do a MOP
load with the DE500-AA, then you may still fail unless VMS has support
for this module as well which you can verify according to note 1261.2.

Hello Dick,
Thank you for your reply.

We are testing the DE500-AA with AS500/500 alpha system firmware V3.9.

	SRM:V6.4-5
	ARC:V4.52
	PALcode: VMS PALcode V1.18-0,OSF PALcode V1.21-0
	SROM:V2.05

Also we tested with alpha system firmware v3.8 and we were faced same problem.

This customer has AS1000A as LAVc boot host and we already installed TIMA kit
(ALPLAN04_062,ALPBOOT06_062) for Alpha VMS V6.2-1. The workaround is that we
change DE500-AA to DE500-XA and this workaround works fine.

Best regards,
Seiki.

Sounds like the console doesn't support the -AA. You might check in the
WRKSYS::ALPHASTATION conference to see what version of firmware is needed. Note
1892 says on the AS500 it is v6.3-11, I don't know about the AS1000.

Hello Dick,

I escalated this problem to IPMT today. If I get some information, reply to
this note.

Thanks,
Seiki.
