1280.0. "DE450-CA thinwire question?" by CSC32::M_STAFFORD (Against the evil rapbolt thugs!) Wed Mar 12 1997 15:05

I am sorry to have to ask such a stupid question...

I have a Etherworks Turbo PCI 10 (DE450-CA), installs fine and works
    great.

Here is my problem/question? I want to install the DE450 in a Acer
Aspire (mini tower). The PCI slot I need to use does not have enough
room for me to use the BNC connector with a T-connector. If I could
somehow extend this out even 1" I would be fine. Does the T-connector
have to be directly connected to the BNC on the DE450...can I get away
with running a thinwire from the DE450 to the T-connector, maybe 6' of
    thinwire away?

BTW, I am in a simple LAN now...soon to serve 2 W95 systems via NT.

    thx

If its your own private LAN give it a shot. Just don't do this
on CXO's lan as all the systems I use are there:-).

...lemme see if I can find that KEIKI node, just a tweak here and...

    :-)

I thought about the fire test, I just hate it though...I almost always
    get burned.

I'm no Ethernet expert, but I think what you're proposing won't work. I
believe you can find T-connectors that give you a longer stem than what you
have right now. That may give you the clearance you need. I'd look into that
first.

I think you are correct. I have been trying to find a T with a longer
stem...I seem to remember seeing them somewhere back in my dark past.

Have you already checked the Open DECconnect catalog?

Go visit http://www.networks.digital.com/ I think there's a pointer to that
catalog somewhere on the net.

1280.6Out of spec but might work!RWCVAX::COULSONRoger Coulson - RSE DTN 223-6158Mon Mar 17 1997 08:4012
This is not my field of expertise but merely a thought. The distance
from center to the BNC T connector to the Ethernet chip on the board
is a stub. Certainly a 6 foot cable would never work. The stub needs
to be minimal and the PCI Ethernet boards are designed to minimize that.
You might try a BNC double male barrel and BNC double female barrel
connector and see if that works. That would add about 2 inches to the
stub and gie you the clearance you want. While out of spec it might
work on a small lan. Anyone else care to comment?

I appreciate all the input...I think I managed to get around the
situation by using another PCI slot I was finally able to get
    mastering.

    thx again,
