| You get the latest firmware CD and use that to update the firmware (ie.
you boot it).

Right now, the Alpha Firmware CD v3.8 contains the latest shipping firmware for
the DEFPA-AA, DEFPA-AB, DEFPA-DA, DEFPA-DB, DEFPA-UA, and DEFPA-UB adapters.
The DEFPA firmware release is v2.46. However, this firmware is the same
revision that ships with all of the above boards, so there's no point in doing
a firmware upgrade to v2.46.
On the other hand...we have released a new 3.1 firmware image for DEFPA that
supports all of the above options as well as the newer DAS UTP and Single Mode
Fiber adapters. This image, however, was too late for the v3.8 Alpha Firmware
CD, but will be available in the v3.9 Alpha Firmware CD release coming up next
month.
If I haven't confused you enough already...you can update your DEFPAs to the
v3.1 DEFPA firmware *today* by running our Intel DOS-based DECBLAST utility
(see NETCAD::PCDRIVERS:[FDDI.DEFPA.RELEASE]DECFW310.ZIP) or wait until next
month and use the new Alpha Firmware CD.

I mentioned this in my original note. DECBLAST is strictly a DOS-based
firmware upgrade utility. You *CAN'T* run it on an Alpha system.
On the other hand, the Alpha Firmware CD contains a different upgrade utility
that obviously DOES run on Alpha. However, the latest firmware images aren't
available for that utility until its next release (v3.9) which should happen
next month.
So...either you pull the FDDI adapter cards, place them in an Intel-based box,
boot DOS and run DECBLAST -OR- you wait until March and use the new Alpha
Firmware CD.

Larry
