| UPN - Voyager - (STV323)
"Distant Origin" - The Voyager crew are unwitting research subjects after
scientists of the Voth race, saurian-like aliens who believe they were the
first intelligent beings to evolve in the Delta Quadrant, discover the human
remains of a Starship Voyager crewman (Lieutenant Hogan killed in the
episode "Basics, Part I") and find a genetic pattern similar to their own.
When Gegen, the chief researcher, suggests that based on these findings, the
true origin of the Voth is Earth, their leader, Minister Odala, deems him a
heretic. To prove his theory, Gegen and his assistant Veer track down the
U.S.S. Voyager, infiltrate the ship and take their next research subject,
Chakotay, hostage.
Starring Kate Mulgrew as Captain Janeway, Robert Beltran as Chakotay, Roxann
Biggs-Dawson as B'Elanna Torres, Jennifer Lien as Kes, Robert Duncan McNeill
as Lt. Tom Paris, Ethan Phillips as Neelix, Robert Picardo as The Doctor,
Tim Russ as Tuvok, Garrett Wang as Harry Kim.
Guest starring are Henry Woronicz as Gegen, Cristopher Liam Moore as Veer,
Marshal Teague as Hulak. Special guest star: Concetta Tomei as Minister
Odala.
The story was written by Brannon Braga and Joe Menosky. The episode was

1092.2 | not too bad | SUBSYS::MSOUCY | MentalmETALMike | Thu May 01 1997 13:00 | 7 |

Not a bad episode, but I hated the minister, what a b*tch she was!
Closed-minded, power hungry (as gegen aludes to I think), etc....and it
figured Veer gets teh snot scared outta him to go against what he
believes is true (and seemed plausible enough to me).

| Sort of refreshing to run into SOMEONE with overpowering technology,
and not completely hostile either.
Hmmm. TRANSWARP technology. I was expecting Janeway to at least
ASK for a push homeward ...

I agree! It was also quite a novel approach to go for such a long time at the
beginning of the episode without seeing any of the regular cast or any Voyager
sets.

| I thought this episode was one of the best so far of Voyager. I agree with
Brian about the long teaser and opening segments with no regulars being cool. I
also thought the alien makeup was much better than usual "slap some putty ridges
in weird places". They seemed to have thought out what an evolved dinosaur
would look like.
I really liked the "extrapolated human" that the Vorn scientists put together
based on the uniform scrap and the bones.
And finally, all I could think of at the end of the inquisition was Galileo. I
half expected Gegen to say under his breath as he walked out, "But it *does*
turn" or the equivalent.
BTW, how did you like the "feeding lamp"? That totally cracked me up!
I wonder if the writers had in mind the Gorn when then invented the Vorn. It
might be cute to have them also be relatives. (Gorn if from the TOS episode
where Kirk and the Gorn critter are put on a planet by some alien race to see
which race is stronger, and Kirk ends up making a gun from native materials.)

| "Gegen" is the German word for "against." I imagine it was intentional.

| I thought it was well done too. Two thumbs up, except for Chakotay's
wonderful speeches. Bluuuurgh.

1092.8 | uniform markings - sounds like ... Voyager! | LABC::HA | | Mon May 05 1997 20:27 | 10 |
| One little nit:
How is it they managed to map the marking "U.S.S. Voyager" on the
material of the uniform to the sound "Voyager" - 1) You would only know
what the symbols meant if you had some sort of Rosetta Stone and 2) You
would not know what they sounded like without some reference like a
person who spoke the language.

1092.9 | minor nit | SUBSYS::MSOUCY | MentalmETALMike | Tue May 06 1997 13:02 | 9 |
|
one other nit:
Why was it that Chakotay could converse with Gegen on his ship but all
we hear were "clicks" from his aide on Voyager? Nothing mentioned as to
why this worked one way but not the other...

1092.10 | character naming 101... | QUARRY::petert | rigidly defined areas of doubt and uncertainty | Tue May 06 1997 13:13 | 11 |
| Their universal translator worked better than Voyagers?
Or maybe Veer was just stuttering?
My biggest nit: Are the writers just unaware or do they somehow
pay homage to B5 by naming a bumbling assistant "Veer", which
sounds the same as a (actually formerly) bumbling assistant
"Vir" to a Centauri ambassador? And of course on
DS9 there is Leeta, pronounced the same as Lyta on B5.
Sigh...
