Conference 7.286::star_trek

    
    This was a fun one and another enjoyable Voyager episode. The holodoc's
    perfect family was a hoot, and so was B'Elanna's reaction to them. I
    was glad to see the doc finish his holostory, and it was interesting to
    see his daily reactions to 'real life' change as a result of it. I
    liked everything in this episode except Kes's new long hair. Keep her
    new slinky jumpsuit but lose that extra hair. :-) I noticed B'Elanna
    changed her hair too, her forehead seems more visible now, and the
    braiding around her ear looked smart I thought.

    I get nervous when they start changing things though. They hit a
    perfect look and feel to the characters and sets on the show, I hope
    they don't go messing with the winning formula...

I liked this one, too.  I cried at the end, it was so sad.  Melodramatic, yes,
but effective.

So Paris has become the de facto psychological advisor to everyone on the ship?

    I caught most of this, didn't notice Be'Lanas(sp) new doo, DID notice
    Kes's and I must say IT STINKS! BIG TIME! Phew! Someone should shoot
    that person! ;-) She looks/looked much cuter with the short doo.
    
    Paris appears to be fitting in more as a role model now or am I
    thinking of something else here? He has done this in some other past
    episodes also. Neelix they can lose and I won't care because I was
    getting really sick and tired of his nosey attitude(s). I don't think
    he really is adding much to this show now since they are in uncharted
    territory (since they left that Swarm area I think or not long
    afterwoulds, after Kazon's). They do seem to be focusing more on the
    top 5 though eh?

    Geez, even I had a tear or two at the end.  The thing that made this so
    effective was that Picardo can put such expression into his face you
    really feel like you're him - at least I did.
    
    Immediately afterward, there was a story about a thirteen-year-old boy
    who got hit on the head with a discus at a track meet the day before
    and died as a result of his injuries. It was a weird accident because
    he was standing within the range of safety.  And then Niki Taylor was
    on PrimeTime talking about the death of her sister Krissy from a rare
    heart condition at age seventeen.  "Real Life" indeed ...

    Kes's new hair covers up her ears - maybe less make-up time?  Of
    course, any make-up time saved is probably more than made up for in
    wigs and / or hairdresser time.  But I do like the old 'do better.
    
    When B'lana first appeared with her new braid - I thought she had one
    but it was almost unnoticeable except for the fact that her hair seemed
    to have an asymmetric quality to it.
    
    The thing that bugs me about this episode is that there wasn't anything
    particularly interesting about the anomaly other than it existed
    between subspace and normal space.  I think they missed an opportunity
    to lose the shuttle and / or Tom Paris in another part of space or time
    for a while and possibly gain some ground toward getting home.

Kes's old hair was a wig.  Her new hair might just be her own.  I saw photos in
a magazine of her being made up; they showed her in a skull cap about to have a
wig put on.  I remember Jennifer Lien when she was Rouanne on "Phenom," and her
hair looked a lot like Kes's now.

    I also thought this was one of the better episodes.  I'm not sure which
    was the sub-plot, though ;-).  The holo-family was definitely the more
    interesting of the two, with the "anomaly" being there just to have
    something for everybody else to do (and also so the Doctor could have
    somebody to lecture about being reckless.)

"Real Life" - After The Doctor creates a holographic wife and two children
for himself in order to enhance his performance as a caring physician,
Torres modifies the program to make The Doctor's picture perfect Holo-family
more of an authentic experience. Soon, his teenage son is listening to
Klingon music and The Doctor deduces that he has more than he bargained for.

Starring Kate Mulgrew as Captain Janeway, Robert Beltran as Chakotay, Roxann
Biggs-Dawson as B'Elanna Torres, Jennifer Lien as Kes, Robert Duncan McNeill

K'Kath.

The story was written by Harry Kloor and the teleplay was by Jeri Taylor.
The episode was directed by Anson Williams.

          The "anomaly" was definitly Twister in space.

    I'm surprised that with the major goal of getting back to the Alpha
    quadrant, and the discovery of a yet unknown area of "space" between
    space and sub-space, and that they now know that a ship can get into,
    survive in and get out of the area, that a lot more attention wasn't
    paid to exploring the anomaly as a way of getting home.  Is travel
    in this area even faster than sub-space?  How does the area compare to
    a worm-hole? The Worm-hole in DS9 does seem to have some volume.
