2079.0. "Formula for calculating equine weight?" by TUXEDO::ROMBERG (So many log files, so little documentation.....) Mon May 05 1997 12:48

Does anyone have the formula for calculating a horse's weight
based on body measurements (girth and length)? I saw it once
in rec.equitation, but can't find it now. I'd like to get a
more accurate guestimate of my horse's weight (for worming),
and I believe the formula would give me a better idea than
the tapes, not knowing what body type the tapes are based on.
I have a 17 hand QH, with a QH body type (he fills an 86"
blanket), and am pretty sure he doesn't weigh the same as a
short-backed 17 hand TB!

    Cathy,

How complicated do you want to get? David Willoughby's book, "Growth
and Nutrition in Horses" has several formulas for estimating weight.
One of them uses several measurements (girth; length; neck girth at
throatlatch, gaskin girth, etc) I'd be glad to look them up for you.

Unfortunately, I'm not conviced that any simple formula using just
girth and length is any better than just girth itself. In EQUUS 165
(July 1991), there was an article entitled "Weighty Matters". That
article had a chart with 3 scales: girth, length, and weight. You
measure the horse's girth and length. Then you draw a line between the
measurements and read off the weight. The method did not produce
weight estimates that were at all consistent with the other methods
described in the article. See Note 33.44 -< EQUUS' Article on Weight
Estimation :-( >- if you want a description of the rest of the problems
    I had with their article.

John,

I'll go for anything easy to moderately complicated - I don't mind doing
math ;^).

It seems the farm where I board this guy may have developed a
parasite problem. I've since put *my horse* on Strongid C, but
would like to know how close I am to guessing his weight. Since
there's no truck scale at the barn, I'd like some way of estimating his
weight, other than something over 1K lbs.

[please, no comments on how the entire barn should be on Strongid C - it's
not my barn to run, and with the number of horses there, and the mindset of
the management, I'm just going to work to keep my critter as parasite free
as possible]

It would seem to me that given any two horses of X girth, if one
is 8 inches longer than the other, it could conceivably weigh more
[longer 'cylinder' of body mass], no?

I will give the tape a try, just for grins and giggles (if the tape manages
to fit around his royal roundness, but would appreciate anything to compare
against as a cross-reference, short of finding a truck weigh station and
unloading him ;^)

John, do you memorize the Eqqus issues??? How can you remember the
issue number and just about everything in the book?? or do you have a
stack of the books in your office and you quickly thumb through them a
    question pops up here ???

    Louisa,

    >do you memorize the Eqqus issues???

No, they aren't worth the trouble. ;-) In this case, I "cheated"! I
remembered that Equus did an article on weight estimation and that I
had tried their techniques. I later wrote them a letter saying I
thought the article was a bummer. I posted the contents of the letter
here under the magazine topic. So, I looked up found my note and
used cut & paste to get most of my reply to Cathy. See? No magic. ;-)

It might not be magic - but your still very impressive.

What do you think of the weight tapes? We use them alot. But, we are
not looking for them to be accurate. We use them all summer, to be
sure our kids are not putting on alot of weight. We have a 6 acre
paster and they can get real fat real quick. We see them every day,
so it's hard for us to tell if they have put on some lbs.

It's been fun putting the tape on the Comet (our baby) every few weeks,
our horses weight does not change that much - but Comet's does. He'll
gain 50lbs in 3 weeks - it's just so fun to watch him grow.

2079.6The simple formulaDECWET::JDADDAMIOThink softlyTue May 06 1997 17:2942
Formulas for weight estimation from Willoughby's "Growth and
	Nutrition in Horses".

The simple formula using girth alone produces results
similar to weight tapes. Weight tapes usually say they
give weight within 10% (about 100 pounds for an adult
horse!) or give you a range rather than a precise number.
So, I prefer Willoughby's method because it gives you a
single number which he claims is within 2% (20 - 30 pounds
for an adult horse). I'll do the more complex formula in a
	separate note.

Willoughby claims that you can't measure more accurately
than the nearest 1" but I always try for nearest 1/2". You can
use any tape measure for these measurements but cloth ones
are better than steel ones (like carpenters use) because they
bend around the horse easier and they don't make noises which
could spook a horse. Sewing stores often carry cloth tape measures
up to 100" long. They should be big enough even for Cathy's Jolly
Giant! ;-) Sometimes, feed stores carry cloth tapes with inches
on one side and something else (like cow weight) on the other.

	Weight(pounds) = (Fudge_factor * girth in inches)

	where Fudge_factor =

0.1387	for colts up to 5 years or 66" girth
measurement or 50" girth for pony breeds

0.1382	for fillies up to 5 years or 66" girth
measurement or 50" girth for pony breeds
0.14475	for Adult Males (all breeds including ponies
w/ girths of at least 50")

0.14341	for Adult Males (all breeds including ponies
w/ girths of at least 50")

I wrote a simple computer program which computes weights
from the girth measurement using these formulas. The
program's output appears in the next 4 notes.

2079.11The complicated formulaDECWET::JDADDAMIOThink softlyTue May 06 1997 17:3128
Willoughby's more complicated formula uses 6 measurements in inches:

Girth of neck - minimum at throatlatch
Chest Girth - maximum behind withers
	Girth of forearm - maximum
	Girth of gaskin - maximum
Girth of hind cannon - minimum
Length of trunk - slantwise from shoulder to buttock
NOTE: This is not quite the same as blanket
measurements which are done from center of the
chest to buttock so this measurement should be
several inches smaller than your horse's blanket
size. Willoughby states that the trunk length
of nearly all horses will be between 86% and 90% of
the girth measurement. For example, one of our horses
has a 75 inch girth. So Willoughby's numbers suggest
he should have a trunk length between 64.5" and 67.5"
He measured 65 inches in trunk length (87%) but he
		takes an 80" blanket.

The formula:

Body weight (pounds) = (Neck + Chest + Forearm +
				Gaskin + HindCannon ) * Length / Fudge

where Fudge = 392.7 for adult males and 395.7 for
		adult females.

John,

Thank you so much for all this information...I know what I will be
doing the next few times I see my big guy! I actually found my weight
tape last night, but after looking at it, I think my moose-child is
going to be off the scales (it will measure his height okay, but I
don't think it will make it around his girth!)

By the way, you wouldn't have to unload your horse at the weigh
station, you would just have go twice, once with the horse and once
without and subtract the two. If your measuring the truck as well
you would have to account for fuel and people (keeping them the same).

It would be interesting to see how close the some of the tape methods
    got.

2079.6The simple formula(revisited)DECWET::JDADDAMIOThink softlyWed May 07 1997 14:1963
I am reposting the formulas for weight estimation from
Willoughby's "Growth and Nutrition in Horses" to correct
	1) a typo, 2) an omission and 3) the error estimates
in the program output. I'll describe the changes briefly
here so you don't have to read the whole note again to know
	what changed.
		1. The typo: I gave two different fudge factors for
adult males. The smaller one was supposed to be
		   for adult females.
		2. The omission: I neglected to say that the computer
program uses the colt/filly fudge factors for girths
up to 66" for horses and up to 50" for ponies. Then,
it uses the adult appropriate fudge factors.
		3. The error: The computer program had a typo in it
which made the error estimates for adult
		   horses/ponies 1% instead of 2%. I fixed it and
		   will repost all cases.
Some day, I'll learn how to type and then most of this kind
	of problem will be avoided!

0.14341	for Adult Females (all breeds including ponies
w/ girths of at least 50")

I wrote a simple computer program which computes weights
from the girth measurement using these formulas. The program
uses the colt/filly fudge factors for girths up to 66" for
horses and upto 50" for ponies. Then, it uses the adult
fudge factors. I used an error estimate of 2% in all cases.
The program's output appears in the next 4 notes.

2079.14For thos inquiring minds that want to know the results...TUXEDO::dce002.lkg.dec.com::rombergThu May 08 1997 10:2431
Well, last night the big guy and I had a measuring session, and the
results are in:

For my horse (17hh, 16 yr old QH gelding)

Weight tape
Off the printed scale (which goes to 1321) by about 3". If you
extrapolate out the 16lb increments, his weight would be 1449.

Willoughby's simple formula
  Heart girth = 79.5, age = 16, sex = male (gelding)
  Weight(pounds) = (.14475 * 79.5) = 1524 +/- 30

Willoughby's more complex formula
  neck = 34, chest = 79.5, forearm = 22,
  gaskin = 19, hind cannon = 9.25, length = 70
  weight (pounds) = ((34+ 79.5+ 22+ 19 + 9.25) * 70) / 392.7
                  = 1498.5

I figure I can pretty safely consider him to be a 1500lb chicken
(he's not known for his bravery!).

For grins and giggles, I did the measurements on a 16.2+ thoroughbred
mare last night also. Her numbers also came out pretty close.
tape = 1206 (she was on the scale ;^)
	simple = 1269 +/- 25
	complex = 1254
