I have a friend whose mare was accidentally bred by a coming 2 year old who had not shown any interest in the opposite sex until he crashed through the fence and bred her mare. The mare was in the paddock next to him and came into heat and backed up to the fence sending his testosterone through the roof! She is totally despondent as she was planning on breeding her mare this year to a stallion of another breed. She called the vet and he told her he would ultrasound her in 2 weeks. Isn't there a shot that will bring her back into heat? Also, who should be responsible for the shot (providing there is one), ultrasound, farmcall, etc. etc? Both the stallion and the mare are boarded at a nice facility with a stallion paddock set far away from the mares (that he was NOT in). Karen

Wow, usually vets are trying to breed the mares, not unbreed them! I can see why he didn't recommend anything, not running into that too often. I would think Tufts (508)839-5395 would know just what to do, perhaps just a high dose of regumate (kind of like a high dose of birth control pills, like their toting now as a morning after type thing?, I'm not sure if it's the same, I give it to my mare when she's in heat). I'll bet there's something simple she can give oraly herself, sure a LOT cheaper than waiting. She could probably call the Regumate company (if I wasn't looking for an ad to find you the number, I'd have seen one right away!) Sharon |
