1999.0. "Keith Angstadt clinic/comments " by TOLKIN::BENNETT () Tue Oct 24 1995 13:12
Keith Angstadt clinic
---------------------
I rode with Keith Angstadt this past weekend. This is the second time
he has conducted a clinic at Briarwood and everyone I've spoken since
have said their lessons went well. Keith has a great sense of humor
and is very positive - but he's also brutally honest - which is what I
expect (and pay for).
Like Lois, Keith stresses straightness and forwardness. Unlike the
Lois clinic, my horse was not forward that day, so I had the opportunity
to learn a few techniques to get him in front of the leg. Since
Dexter's excuse is insubordination and not the inability to do the work,
Keith had me use my whip a bit more aggressively (yes Dexter threw a
hissy fit). But the battle ended quickly and when the dust settled I
did have a horse surging forward from the legs.
Keith also stressed the importance of keeping the hands an equal
distance from the wither and for me to be ready to correct this when I
tend to move both hands (evenly, of course) off to one side when my
horse performs a body snarl. Keith also had us doing counter bend for
straightness and leg yields from the circle for more suppleness.
