1992.0. "Starting a Club from scratch?" by PCBUOA::LPIERCE (Do the watermelon crawl) Tue Sep 12 1995 11:23

I was wondering if any of you have started a club before? Do you know what
is involved? The reason I ask is because this past year I was the president
of a club. I had a wonderful time and we put on some super events, and
all who attended wanted more. :-)

The club had been in existence since 1971, so all the legal structure
was put in place for me - I just stepped in as a department head - or should
I say "puppet president"

A few of the original board members (including the x-prez) who didn't want
anything to do w/the club - were just to much to handle and they also
didn't want to give up the rains. I was just plugging along doing what I
wanted to do, but it got just to darn hard and not worth it anymore.

I resigned today along with the VP,Membership & Newsletter people and as
of 12/30 there will no longer by a Secretary or Treasure. I was hoping
I could just take over the legal structure of the club once it folds, but
I have reconsidered that thought.

I rather have a club of my own! But HOW? I don't want to start small, but
I guess I'll have to? I am ready for spring w/ideas for 3 dressage shows,
2 trail rides/hunter pace's and lots of ideas for meetings, meetings,
meetings!

What do I need for a legal structure for a non-profit organization? about
how much $$$ would it take to start??? I can get about 10-15 members right
off the bat..

Any other info would be greatly appreciated.

    Louisa,

I don't have any info on starting a club, but I live in Harvard and a
few of us ride together in Harvard and was thinking of starting the
Harvard Horse Association up again, since it also doesn't exist
    anymore.

But maybe we could combine the 2 groups/area together. We have about
1/2 of the group that rides Western and 1/2 of the group that rides
English. So we are looking for something that would combine both types
    of riders.

Can you keep me posted on how you are making out and give me more
details on how the club would work and when meeting would be held.

I can also give you a list of people that may be interested in joining.

    Thanks
