I have an Arabian mare that has a freeze brand - she had it when I
bought her. Its under her mane so I don't usually notice it, but I like
knowing its there for theft prevention purposes.
Its also on her registration papers with the Arabian Registry.
Question:
Does anyone have any info about how to have this done locally in
southern New Hampshire (Manchester area)? My mare is originally from
California so I can't get any local leads from previous owners.

That's exactly the reason it's recommended *NOT* to put the freeze
brand under the mane. I recall an account in EQUUS some years ago of an
Arabian which had been freeze branded under the mane. It was stolen and
sent to the slaughterhouse. No one at the slaughterhouse noticed the
brand in the first few days the horse was there. Somebody finally
noticed it because the horse reared or rolled or something that flipped
the mane over to the over side.
As to how to get it done in So. NH...That's a little tougher. We had
our horses done 12+ years ago when we lived there but the guy had come
in from upstate NY as a favor. He was the nearest guy. Best bet is to
contact the Arabian Registry and find out who does their freeze branding
in your area.
The type of freeze branding used by the Arabian Registry is based on a
patented system of angled symbols to represent numbers(regular numbers
can be changed - 3 to an 8 ; 1 to a 4 or 7; In this angle system the
characters can't be modified into another symbol). There is/was an
outfit started by the guy who invented the system. They kept records of
brands and franchised people to do branding. The paper work that you have
on the brand should have their address/phone on it...You could contact
them to see if there's someone in your area too. If you don't have any
paper work, I'll look it up on ours.

The Arabian Horse Registry sends representatives around the country
to do freeze marking. Contact them at 303-450-4748 to find out when
a representative will be in New England. I think that, if there's no
visit planned you could set up a day if you have enough participants.
As far as where they put the mark, I think if you don't want it on
the mane side, they'll put it where you want it.
And, if you do get information, could you post it here? I'll bet there
are a few people who would want to participate.
Re: the marking symbols. Let's see if I can describe it accurately.
Purebred Arabians have an A in front of their marking.
1 is represented by ||
The marks, called carots, follow a clockwise circle.
2 is a carot pointing to 2:00.
3 points to 3:00 etc.
and I can't remember what is the mark for 0. I'll have to look at
Back Bey's mark.
The other thing about freeze marks is on gray horses they're hard to
read unless you clip the hair down. You can see it but not necessarily
clearly. And on dark horses the little white hairs grow long and make
the mark difficult to read. But there's no way that you can mistake
a freeze mark for anything else.
