1956.0. "Insurance for Older Horse" by CHEFS::ELKINL (Jumping Jack Flash Lass) Mon Mar 20 1995 03:50

My horse will be turning 15 at the end of the year - I would be
grateful for any information from UK noters as to aged horse insurance
covering vets bills (possibly not excluding internal injury).

If anyone knows of any insurance companies offering this type of cover,
    please let me know.

    Thanks in advance

1956.1Old Age....KERNEL::CHEWTERMon Mar 20 1995 06:4714

    Hi Liz,

Alot of Insurance companies do cater for Older horses, but they
put the price on the animal depending on the size, and they will
only normally cover Accident, and of course TParty and Personal.

One of my Horses - now 18, dropped in price (in my insures eyes) a
considerable amount overnight when he hit the age... even though I'd
never made a claim against him.

Thanks for the previous entry - I know it's not too difficult to get
hold of insurance for older horses but it's the vet bills side of it I
am concerned about. I found one insurance company that covers external
injury which therefore really excludes anything along the lines of
colic, sprained tendons, ligaments, growths blah blah.

Anyone know of this kind of insurance?

    Thanks

    Liz,

Having a 17yr old mare I've just been through this loop.

Is your mare 15 this year or 16 ?
Most policies will cover you up to and including 15.

There were a couple of policies that offered me 'external
injuries' vet fees, life, theft etc. However I didn't
    like their policies and/or price.

I eventually found one that suited, called 16 Plus. It was proposed
an insurance broker - the company backing it are Comercial Union.
It offers me vets fees (albeit limited to 500 per incident) but no
    cover for death.
But having a mare who on paper is only valued at 500 because she
was subject to a partial loss of use claim, means that cover for death
    is not critical.

If you'd like to contact me of-line I'll let you know a bit more.

    Judy,

My mare is 14 at present, this isn't the exact age as we don't know her
full history. Anyway, we're going along with the age that was given
when she was purchased 9 years ago (obviously adding on a year each
year!). Take it that her birthday is Christmas (to be on the safe
side) and she will be 15 in 1996.

The policy that you have for your 16 year old doesn't sound too bad -
that probably means they cover 0 - 15 years in their normal policy (?)
I would be very grateful if you could photocopy the policy, obviously
not the info on your horse), but the exclusions etc. and mail them to
    me. I'm at REO F3/6.

    Thanks forthe pronto replies!

    Liz
