| The primary equine discussion group on internet is rec.equestrian but
to read it one has to have access to a "news-server" computer. Since
the servers are local, I can't help you with the server adress.
There are also equine-related "mailing-lists" of various flavors. I'll
see if I can come up with some mailing-list names and the e-mail
addresses for subscriptions.

| Also, if you subscribe to Prodigy or Compuserve, you get access to
their forums - both have active 'Horse' notesfiles. I'm pretty sure
both have Internet access (Prodigy just announced this has been
enhanced) - not sure if they give you access to a news reader (Usenet).

From COMPUSERVE: GO INTERNET.
A news reader is there. I only just started playing
with WINCIM so don't remember exactly.
From VMS workstations:
I have been playing with the XRN news reader.
See VMS notes file UFP::XRN, kit in note 66.L
Simple comstream passing it a server node.
The server nodes are in the vms notes file UPSAR::NEWS-BACKBONE.
Note 95.L will list the servers available. nntpd @ LGK is
external to DEC so you can access more newsgroups (and I assume
other stuff) but is slower to me.
This server writes to 2 files in your SYS$LOGIN directory. NEWS.RC
and OLDNEWS.RC. I find it's faster to run the server and then go back
and search NEWS.RC by key-word. You might be able to do some searching
with the newsreader but I haven't found it yet.
Someone told be there is a "better" reader than XRN and I think there
are also terminal readers but I have not had the time to check.
The source code is available (see notes files above) but I can't
get it to compile on my ULTRIX workstation.
Everything you have heard regarding how "tame" our moderated notes
files are is very true. I won't start a discussion on the legal
definition of obscenity but a) many people speak somewhat crudely
and b) you can tell by the name of the newsgroup that you should
know what your getting into !

1938.6 | Corrected info | DECWET::JDADDAMIO | Seattle:Life in the espressolane | Mon Dec 19 1994 18:22 | 40 |
| We've been having some problems due to the major power outage yesterday
so I haven't been able to make contact with some of the folks. So,
I don't know (yet) whether there are any harness racing mailing lists.
However, I did get some info...
I'm pretty sure the commercial services can get access to
rec.equestrian. Many of the folks who particpate subscribe through
America On Line. I'm pretty sure some are Prodigy customers too. I
imagine that AOL's competitors have to offer access or lose business.
There is one other horse group among the internet newsgroups:
alt.sport.horse-racing
Unfortunately, my news server doesn't get that one. A friend who gets it
says it's not very good though. So, maybe I'm not missing much. ;-)
Equine-L ! That's the general e-mail service I was thinking of. Since
instructions are given in an earlier note, I won't repeat them here.
There's also a TB racing service(through the same guy mentioned in .3's
www info for horse racing.) It's called the "Derby" Mailing list. To
subscribe, send e-mail to the following address:
[email protected]
The body of the e-mail should ask to subscribe to Derby and include your
name and return e-mail address. The guy who moderates and operates Derby
will process your request.
If it makes a difference to you, you can request to receive postings to
Derby in reflected mode or digest mode. Reflected means that a copy of
each posting will be sent to you as Derby receives it. Digest means that
you will get a copy of all the day's postings in one giant e-mail. If you
don't indicate a choice in your subscription request, you'll get reflected
by default. I am told that reflected mode results in 20 or so e-mails
each day on average. The volume goes up considerably during the build up
to the Triple Crown and Breeders' Cup races.

1938.7 | more detail on usage of EQUINE-L - several options for getting updates | TOOK::MORENZ | JoAnne Morenz NIPG-IPEG US DTN 226-5870 | Tue Dec 20 1994 17:12 | 254 |
| WELCOME TO EQUINE-L:
"Horse Fanciers' Discussion LIst"
What is EQUINE-L?
EQUINE-L is a discussion list for and about horses; all kinds, types and
varieties of horses. Postings ranging from care and feeding of your
backyard hack to scientific research concerning any aspect
of wild or domestic equine populations are welcome. If you wish to
discuss training, human-equine psi experiences, horse "ghosts",
seek a bit of comfort over the loss of a cherished horse, or find the
best way to handle any aspect of horse ownership, you may reasonably
expect to be welcome on EQUINE-L.
EQUINE-L is a very high-volume list. It is also unique in the sense
of "community" and "belonging" which exists among subscribers. If
you are seeking a "just-the-facts" list, this may not be the place
for you. If you are seeking an environment wherein participants
regularly share one another's equine joys and sorrows, you have
found a home.
Managers and Administrators of any institution maintaining an equine
population, (breeders, trainers, tracks or research installations) may
discuss mutual problems and points of interest here. Graphic discussion
of research techniques may be inappropriate for this list and offensive
to some subscribers. Use good taste in what you post.
Reasonable discussion of conservation and environmental issues,
as they specifically relate to equine populations, are welcome here.
The same holds true for almost any aspect of equine veterinary care
and management.
In short, absolutely anything that may reasonably be seen
to have a relationship to equines and/or to human-equine interactions
may be posted here... with one or two exceptions.
What EQUINE-L is NOT!
EQUINE-L is not the place for flames in any form. Period. As list owner
I do not expect to read every post on this list, nor do I want this to
become a moderated/digested list. However, I will not look kindly upon
deliberate attempts to disrupt the list, usurp it to some other topic
unrelated to equines, or use it as a format for politicized "position
statements" or axe-grinding over some emotion-charged subject.
This is not the place for campaigning for animal rights, debating the
ethics of maintaining horses, pleading generalized environmental cases
not directly bearing on an equine population, arguing the pros and cons
vegetarianism, hunting, farm animals or any similarly tangential topics.
This is, first and foremost, a place for people who love horses. Any
kind of horses.
Blatantly commercial postings, ads, chain letters, etc., are unwelcome.
None of the foregoing is intended to stifle discussion; it *is* intended
to ensure that problems which have sometimes plagued other discussion lists
do not take root here. Nobody is going to "look over your shoulder" to
scrutinize every word posted. There are no "Thought Police" here.
To avoid future misunderstandings It is necessary to state these
restrictions at the outset, rather than attempting to impose them at some
later date. It is my hope that all this will make EQUINE-L the kind of
place you want to return to often, and whose arrival in your mailbox
becomes a welcome and anticipated event. I reserve all necessary
options to myself.
Once you have been added to the list, the LISTSERV will send you a file
detailing further options you may wish to employ.
Once again, welcome to EQUINE-L.
---------- ---- -*- ---- ----------
SUBSCRIBING, UNSUBSCRIBING AND POSTING TO EQUINE-L
--------------------------------------------------
A number of people have asked how to subscribe to EQUINE-L. This brief
instruction sheet is intended for them, in the hope that it may make the
sometimes arcane world of E-mail, listservs, and discussion lists a
bit less confusing.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
---------------
EQUINE-L is a "peered" list. That means it resides on more
than one network location, or "node". These are called "peers".
When you send your subscription request to the LISTSERV
address, it is possible that the LISTSERV software may
determine that another list peer will serve you more efficiently.
If that is the case, you will receive an automatic note from
LISTSERV to the effect that you have been added to the list,
and specifying the node where your subscription resides.
REMEMBER THIS INFORMATION. This is where your EQUINE-L mail will
come from, and this is where you must send your list postings.
Posts sent to one list peer will automatically be distributed
to EVERYONE on the list, regardless of what peer houses
their subscription.
NOTE: There is no Internet address at present for node PCCVM.
HOW DO I SUBSCRIBE TO EQUINE-L?
-------------------------------
Discussion lists are generally run using software called LISTSERV.
To subscribe to EQUINE-L, one must tell the LISTSERV to add one's userid
to the list of subscribers. This is accomplished by sending commands,
usually as E-mail, to the LISTSERV, ***NOT*** to the actual list.
Typically, to subscribe to EQUINE-L one must proceed as follows:
Send E-mail to:
<[email protected]> for Bitnet users,
<[email protected]> for Internet users,
with a blank subject line and the following command as the
first (and only) line of the message body:
SUBSCRIBE EQUINE-L Your_Full_Name
replacing "Your_Full_Name" with your real, full, true name.
You may post using an "Alias" if you wish, but you must
subscribe with your full, true identity. You must supply a
full,i.e., two part, name. The listserv will not accept
subscriptions with a first name only. Use of initials only
is discouraged. Use of pseudonyms, e.g., "Phantom Phreaker"
and the like will get you removed from the list unless you
have previously communicated with the List Owner justifying
your need for anonymity.
Conversely, to leave EQUINE-L proceed as follows:
Send E-mail to:
<[email protected]> for Bitnet users,
<[email protected]> for Internet users,
with a blank subject line and the following command as the
first (and only) line of the message body:
SIGNOFF EQUINE-L
HOW DO I POST TO EQUINE-L?
--------------------------
To send, or "post", a message on EQUINE-L so that it will be
seen by all subscribers, proceed thusly:
Once subscribed, send EQUINE-L postings as E-mail to:
<[email protected]> for Bitnet users,
<[email protected]> for Internet users,
just as you would if you were sending E-mail to another person.
You will not normally receive any confirmation from the list
that your posting has been received, nor will a copy of your
own postings be sent back to you by the LISTSERV.
TURNING MAIL ON AND OFF: SETTING NOMAIL
----------------------------------------
From time to time you may find it convenient to halt the flow of
incoming EQUINE-L list mail without giving up your subscription
to the list. This may be due to a sudden surge in workload allowing
little time to read list mail, vacation, sabbatical, or a number
of other reasons. One significant advantage of this method over simply
signing off the list is that, while you will receive no incoming
list mail when this option is in effect, you preserve your privilege
of posting to the list.
To halt the flow of incoming EQUINE-L E-mail:
Send E-mail to:
<[email protected]> for Bitnet users,
<[email protected]> for Internet users,
with a blank subject line and the following command as the
first (and only) line of the message body:
SET EQUINE-L NOMAIL
To restore incoming EQUINE-L mail service, repeat the above procedure
but send the command:
SET EQUINE-L MAIL
CAN I GET EQUINE-L POSTINGS IN DIGEST FORMAT?
---------------------------------------------
In a word: Yes! You can choose to receive a few daily mailings from
EQUINE-L containing all the individual postings made that day. This
will be sent to you in a digest format, conforming to RFC 1153.
Selecting this option automatically sets the NOMAIL option for your
EQUINE-L subscription, so you will not receive any other list mail
except the daily digests. You will still be able to post to EQUINE-L
in the normal fashion, just as if you were receiving the postings
as individual, in-coming E-mail. There will, of course, be an increased
time lag between the submission of a posting by a EQUINE-L subscriber
and the time you receive it in digest form.
To select the digest option for EQUINE-L:
Send E-mail to:
<[email protected]> for Bitnet users,
<[email protected]> for Internet users,
with a blank subject line and the following command as the
first (and only) line of the message body:
SET EQUINE-L DIGEST
To deactivate this option and once again receive each individual
EQUINE-L posting as a separate, individual piece of incoming E-mail,
proceed as above but send the command:
SET EQUINE-L MAIL
HOW CAN I GET FURTHER HELP?
---------------------------
If you send the command HELP to ANY Listserv, either as E-mail or an
interactive message, you will receive a brief summary of other
Listserv commands which may be useful.

1938.26 | Blood Horse and Thoroughbred Times web sites! | DECWET::JDADDAMIO | Jog? No, ever see a jogger smile? | Wed Nov 08 1995 13:08 | 23 |
| Good news for racing fans who browse the web:
The Blood-Horse's WWW site is up and running. It is very extensive,
with many connectible links to the many topics featured in the
magazine each week. There is also a daily edition with updates, an
electronic forum, links to racing literature, a virtual farm tour, etc.
It is quite impressive:
http://www.bloodhorse.com
It seems everybody's jumping on the bandwagon. Thoroughbred Times and
Equine-on line also have WWW sites:
http://www.equineonline.com
http://www.thoroughbredtimes.com
And Cindy Pierson maintains a comprehensive list of racing related
web sites at:
http://www.wsnet.com/~sysclp/racing.html
She asks that anyone using the site inform her of any sites she doesn't
list so she can add them.

1938.27 | Haynet | ORAREP::OAKEY | I'll take Clueless for $500, Alex | Wed Jan 17 1996 12:02 | 9 |
|
While surfing the other day, found the following
http://www.freerein.com/haynet/
Haynet is a good home page with pointers to many, many other pages and
is well broken out by interest areas (first place I found a reference to
a home page for AHSA - according to AHSA this spring some time).

1938.28 | Grand Prix: Equestrian/Tack Shop | RANGER::WASSER | John A. Wasser | Thu Jan 18 1996 13:53 | 6 |
| One advertisement in a equestrian magazine included a Web location:
http://www.gprix.com/
They didn't have what I was looking for (inexpensive rubber/plastic
English riding boots) but had plenty of other horse items for sale.

1938.30 | Spanish Riding School, Stud farm and resorts | DECWET::JDADDAMIO | Think softly | Mon Mar 24 1997 18:05 | 21 |
| In .9, Vicky Janicki reported finding an Austrian website with Spanish
Riding School/Lipizzan videos. The URL has been changed. It is now:
http://austria-info.at/ava/lip.html
They've also added another page with videos at the Austrian stud farm
in Piber. You can access it through the link on the above page or
directly through the URL:
http://austria-info.at/ava/piber.html
For our European friends and/or North Americans travelling in Europe,
there is also a site with info about riding in Austria. The bad
news(for most Americans, at least), is that the text for that site is
in German. The good news is that they tell you about resorts which
cater to riders and offer a mixture of lessons and open country riding.
There's also an order form to get a catalog of all the resorts, etc.
This can be accessed through the Piber stud farm site or directly
through the URL:
http://austria-info.at/reiten/dindex.html
