1913.3 | I'm pretty sure CBC will carry it | DECWET::JDADDAMIO | Seattle Rain Festival: 1/1-12/31 | Tue Jul 26 1994 14:35 | 11 |
| CBC(Canadian) mentioned earlier this year that they would be broadcasting
the WEG. CBC is freely available on satellite and, if you're close
enough to a major Canadian city, via antenna. CBC did several hours
coverage of the last WEG 4 years ago and it was pretty good. We got it
over our regular antenna(we're only 120 miles from Vancouver) I haven't
seen the current WEG in the schedule yet though.
I'll holler if I see it. I've looked through next week's satellite TV
schedule already and didn't see it. Our satellite TV listing runs
from Sunday to Saturday so, unless it's Sunday of next week, it probably
won't be for a couple weeks yet.

1913.4 | CBC Broadcasting | KAM500::MCLEOD | | Wed Jul 27 1994 11:09 | 10 |
| CBC is very good for broadcasting Equestrian events, they signed
a 3 year contract with Spruce Meadows in Calgary for all the major
Show Jumping Events.
I did not know that they would televise this though, because I have
been waiting for years to see Equestrian events from the World Cup
etc. on TV and I have yet to see it. If I hear anything hear in
Canada about times or dates etc. I will inform you.

The CBC don't typically broadcast World Cup events. Those are annual
championships in dressage and showjumping sponsored by Volvo.
The last World Equestrian Games were held in Stockholm in 1990. CBC
sent Terry Loebel(sp?) and that great white haired announcer that
retired last year to Stockholm as commentators. They covered mostly
showjumping and some dressage but also included highlights of the endurance
competitions, carriage driving, etc. It was on their "Sports Weekend"
show for 2 different weekends. That's where I expect they'll cover it
this time too.

| Re: previous few
In the United States the July 15 issue of "Chronicle of the Horse" had
quite a comprehensive listing of the members of each team in each
discipline for the major countries competing. Just a list of names for
the less well known equestrian nations.
In Europe the EuroSport satellite channel carried the 1990 World
Equestrian Games from Stockholm. It's the only time I have been happy
with an airline screw up. My flight from Heathrow was cancelled; BA put
me up in a local hotel and I watched the WEG Eventing Cross Country on
TV. Eurosport also carried the European Championships from
Achselschwang last September when I was at European DECUS in Montreux.
As far as U.S. TV coverage is concerned I have not heard of any. It's
possible that a set of videotapes will be produced as happened for the
1990 WEG.

1913.7 | Some news of Day 2 at WEG | DECWET::JDADDAMIO | Seattle Rain Festival: 1/1-12/31 | Fri Jul 29 1994 18:27 | 43 |

Subject: WEG,DAY 2, BAD NEWS

Day Two of the WEG...
Britain is in first place after the dressage phase of the 3-day event. That
was because of the first place standing of Mary Thomson on King William. Her
42 points could not be topped by any of the riders in the second group of the
total of 94 who rode today (Thursday).
Fellow British rider Karen Dixon on Get Smart moved into a second place tie
with France's Jean Teulere on Rodosto. Both have 49.8 points. The US's Karen
O'Connor is now in fifth place on Biko after Thursday's riders performed.
Blyth Tait of New Zealand is in fifth place with 50.6 points--don't have his
mount's name--but the 1990 WEG 3-day event champion has his favorite phase, the
endurance ride, coming next. Bruce Davidson of the US, who has won the world
3-day event championship three times is in 12th place at 54.2 points.
Following Britain in the team standings is the US and New Zealand. France
stands fourth with Germany fifth.
In the main WEG stadium, the dressage competition began with the first half of
the riders performing for the three-judge panel.
Defending WEG Champion Nicole Uphoff-Becker of Germany is first with a score of
1,742, or 74.13 percent. Dutch riders Sven Rothenberger and Ellen Bontje are
in second and third respectively wth 1,693 and 1,684 points. Fourth is Karin
Rehbein of Germany with 1.675 points and Kyra Kyrklund of Finland is in fifth
with 1,639. Krya won the silver at Stockholm four years ago. The second half
rides tomorrow. If I can get names of mounts, I'll post them later tonight.
Stay tuned. If there's more on this, I'll post and I'll post Friday's results
of the WEG, but then I"m going on a long-planned vacation. Back on 8/6, and
I'll summarize and post again. Sorry...

I was able to watch some of the cross-country on TV here on Saturday
afternoon - I saw Mark Todd and Just and Ace take a fall at the second
water combination, which left them out of the running for a
medal/place. Mark flipped over the head of his horse when it refused
to jump out of the water combination. He was unhurt and remounted and
continued. I saw Bruce Davidson have the same trouble with his horse
(can't remember the name) in the first water combination, and he
re-mounted and continued on course. Both incurred time penalties.

1913.10 | Thought on WEG | PEKING::KYNASTONW | | Fri Aug 19 1994 10:28 | 12 |
| Brilliant news for the British Event team, right on top of the world!
A friend of mine was lucky enough to have groomed for a Swedish Event
rider and he said the conditions were not very good at all..
Apparently the cross country course was a 2 hour drive from where the
main stadium was, the heat was intense with horses dehydrating BEFORE
going cross country. Some horses were affected by the heat so much
they were not allowed to run after being examined in the 10 minuite box
by a vet.
I wonder what its going to be like at the Olympics in Atlanta?

1913.11 | Claim to fame? | PEKING::KYNASTONW | | Mon Aug 22 1994 07:23 | 10 |
| Moderator please feel free to move this....
Thought that I would just let you all know that on friday Vaughn
Jeffries the new World Three Day Event Champion visited the yard where
I keep my horse. He went to see one of his old Advanced event horses
who someone has on loan. He was even introduced my horse by my friend
who told him a little bit about my horse. So theres my claim to fame
even though I missed him!

1913.12 | WEG coverage on ESPN | DECWET::JDADDAMIO | Seattle:Life in the espressolane | Wed Oct 19 1994 14:34 | 9 |
| The only schedule announcement I've seen so far for WEG coverage in
North America is this:
Sunday Dec 18th 1994, ESPN, 4 PM (Eastern?) 1 *hour*
I found this announcement in a recent issue of The Chronicle. It didn't
say which time zone the 4 PM was but, since they and most of their
readers are on the east coast, I'm guessing it's Eastern time.
They're going to cover a 2 week show in an hour?

1913.13 | WEG on tape. | A1VAX::GUNN | I couldn't possibly comment | Wed Oct 19 1994 16:14 | 14 |
| Thanks to being on several equestrian junk mail catalog lists I have
seen two sets of videotapes of the World Equestrian Games. One is a set
of six produced by Equestrian Vision in the U.K. for about $200 or $40
each. The other is a set of three tapes costing in total somewhat less
but still $40+ each which are in the current Dover (Wellesley, MA)
catalog supplement. The Equestrian Vision set devotes one tape to each
discipline - Show jumping, three day event, driving, dressage,
endurance and a "highlights" tape. Previous Equestrian Vision tapes I
have purchased have been reasonably good. The producer of the Dover
tapes is unknown to me. I an debating whether it's worth purchasing
either set.
Incidentally the WEG Organizers in Holland are in bankruptcy to the
tune of $7 Million.

1913.14 | Equestrian Vision = good coverage! | DECWET::JDADDAMIO | Seattle:Life in the espressolane | Wed Oct 19 1994 16:27 | 8 |
| If the Equestrian Vision tapes are anywhere *near* as good this time as
they were for the last WEG, they're worth the price of $200 for a set
of 6. We rented them from a local tack shop last time and they were
*excellent*. Each tape was well over an hour. Most were in the 90-100
minutes range.
How about posting the address? Just in case my tack shop doesn't get them
this time.

1913.15 | Tapes and TV Coverage in general (updated). | A1VAX::GUNN | I couldn't possibly comment | Fri Oct 21 1994 13:18 | 65 |
| Re: .14
I must have already heaved the catalog into the trash. However I found
tapes in the Miller's Fall/Winter 1994 Catalog as well:
Volume 1 - Showjumping/Endurance/Three Day, 90 min, #4102-2, $29.95
Volume 2 - Driving/Vaulting/Dressage, 90 min, #4103-2, $29.95
Both tapes - #4103-2, $49.95 for 3 hours
Miller's P.O Box 883, Rutherford, NJ 07070-0883 1-800-553-7655
Dover Saddlery Fall/Winter 1994 Supplement
Volume I - Dressage (70 min), Vaulting (20 min), #18GA, $29.70
Volume II - Three Day (60 min), Driving (30 min), #18GB, $29.70
Volume III - Jumping (45 min), Endurance (45 min), #18GC, $29.70
All three - #18GD, $84.90 for 4.5 hours
Dover Saddlery, P.O. Box 5837, Holliston, MA 01746 1-800-989-1500
(or from their store on Route 16 in Wellesley, MA)
These sets of tapes, from the illustrations of the boxes in the
catalogs, appear to be produced by the same unnamed outfit. Note that
the titles on the boxes in the illustrations do not match the
descriptions in either case!
For comparison, Equestrian Video U.K. prices are as follows:
1. Dressage (90 min) 19.99
2. Eventing (90 min) 19.99
3. Show Jumping (60 min) 14.99
4. Carriage Driving (60 min) 14.99
5. Endurance/Vaulting (60 min) 14.99
6. Highlights of all disciplines (60 min) 10.99
Set of 1 - 4 59.99, Set of 1 - 6 79.99
PLUS $5 per tape for NTSC (U.S.) versions plus 10 postage and packing
for the first tape and 3 per tape thereafter for the U.S. and no
reduction for V.A.T. (17.5% U.K. sales tax) exemption.
1 = U.S. $1.55 approximately, that's $210 for 7 hours of tape.
Equestrian Video, Palmerston House, The Street, Cowfold, Horsham, West
Sussex, RH13 8BP, England. From the U.S. 011-44-403-864173
I did buy the Equestrian Videos of the 1990 WEG in Stockholm which are
well done but interest in them drops dramatically with time. I must
have well over 100 hours of taped equestrian events which I either made
myself, bought, or recorded from cable. I can't remember, for example,
when I last looked at the tape I bought of the 1986 Three Day
Championships in Gawler, South Australia, which is why I debate whether
to buy any more.
While there is no shortage of people who want to borrow these tapes
once I have them, I question what horse folk really think the tapes are
worth; probably not the $30 to $40 charged for them. TV coverage of
equestrian sports is shrinking because the media/advertisers don't
think the audience is worth the cost. I heard in the U.K. that one of
the small TV production companies that covers horse sports is
struggling to stay in business. TV coverage, particularly of the Three
Day cross country competition, is quite expensive to put on. Therefore
I expect less rather than more coverage in future, particularly given
the TripleCast fiasco in the U.S. for the Barcelona Olympics ($100
million loss).
