1906.0. "Need burlap source....any ideas?" by STUDIO::BIGELOW (PAINTS; color your corral) Fri Jul 08 1994 09:58

I am in the process of setting up a bomb proofing clinic and I
need to make a jump that I can light on fire. I was told that
burlap works best.....but I don't have any burlap grain bags
(they are all paper), so does anyone have any old burlap bags
or know of a place where I can get some burlap?

Bomb proofing is the excersise of getting your horse to learn to
trust you when presented w/ scary situations or obstacles. ie.
to listen to you and not run off. It is really fun too!

Check with a fabric store. They might know where you can get some or be
able to order you a piece.

You might also check gourmet coffee stores or places that
carry it. I found burlap at Idlyewilde Farms in Acton for
about 25 cents a bag that had been used for coffee. Smelled
great!

You can check out the feed stores and make your own bag of what ever
    size you want.

I got berlap at Farmers Exchange in Framingham. They have big rolls
that they can cut it off to your length or they have small rolls that
you will have more then enough to make a bag from.

I have also seen it at Agway in Northboro in the past.

ps....the bag with cans and "hitting" the horse with them gently does
work. I have sat in on a few clinics and seen it work on fruity horses
and I have even used it in the past my self on other horses. I have
also used the plastic bags. You want the horse to trust you and know
you are not hurting him....not beating him.

    Terry-

The clinic is gonna be on the 30th up at Quicks (in Westboro). It
would be a great thing for the 4H kids to do. Remmy is from Holland
and is one of the top riding something or others there. This bomb
proofing clinic has obstacles such as large balls that you hit them
with lightly, play toss w/ each other, and then roll between the
legs...We work w/ flags, we teach the horse to jump rope, jump fire
and deal w/ guns going off.

    It's a lot of fun....

The bombproofing clinic is full for participants, but we'd welcome
more auditors if anyone is interested. The cost of auditing
    includes lunch.
