1903.1 | Welsh showing... | KERNEL::PCIOF2::CHEWTER | | Tue Jul 05 1994 09:08 | 17 |

When showing our Welsh Cobs they like the horse to be as 'natural' as
possible ie, free mane/tail etc, although there is a fair amount of tiding
up we do, feather manes and tails etc so movement of the horse can be seen.
I do try and show them in halters but at the end of the day its safer to
show them in what you can handle them in, theres nothing worse than seeing a
handler be dragged around the ring! or even being that person on the end of
the lead!
Wear smart and COMFORTABLE shoes/clothing, its best not to look as if you've
just jumped of the horse. Smart trousers/blouse/jacket it normally
acceptable.
Good luck

| Tina-
I have found that I can expect almost anything while haltering. I tend
to look at the class as I would a showmanship class and dress
accordingly, at least I feel I can't go wrong. But I've observed many
handlers looking like they've just rolled out of bed. Who knows?
My yearling is a late baby (5/18/93) and he tends to be smaller and
sometimes more awkward than the early babies. You may or may not
expereince this, as I would assume your horse will have some height.
(If my guy hits between 14.2 - 15 hh I'll be happy, that is the range
of the sire and dam). My yearling is very bulky though as both parents
are quite wide, so at times he looks better porportioned than the
taller thinner ones....just don't get discouraged.
I shot my yearling Western, but next year I'll have a Fjord and I'm not
sure how I will do it. The rules allow Western tack so I might just
go Western, cause it is what I have......and like you, I have not found
anything suitable for young stock in English tack. Can you reference a
breed standard and see what they say?
When I halter the Fjord, I use a black Biothane draft halter. It fits
better than anything else I can find. It consists of the top half of
the halter, and you run a chain under the chin. It look sneat and
shows her head off well (I guess Morgan and Arab halters may be similar
in design).
Good luck, and let us know how it goes.

WHat shows are you planning on hitting?

1903.3 | Halter | SALEM::ROY_K | | Tue Jul 05 1994 10:43 | 11 |
| Tina, I would look in some of the catalogues (Schneiders has lots of
different styles) for a yearling halter suitable for a hunt horse.
If you are showing at open shows in Open halter you will be showing
against all breeds and yes an unregistered horse may be shown in Open
halter.
Your outfit should give some indication of the seat your horse will be
ridden. I would definitely pull, braid or band the mane.

1903.4 | Show Dressing in Scotland | KIRKTN::SMCRITCHIE | | Tue Jul 05 1994 11:07 | 21 |

HELLO FOLKS,
I have a friend who shows her 2 year old filly Hunter regulary and she
uses a brown leather bridle with brass fittings (highly polished).
The filly is bathed, pleated up (mane and tail) and tarted up e.g., Hoof
Oil, Baby Oil around her eyes and muzzle.
As far as the handlers dress. Hunting jacket, buff coloured or white
jodphurs, long or jodphur boots and velvet silk on hat (matching the
boots). Or the alternative is long riding skirt, boot, hacking jacket
and western style hat (mostly navy blue but I've seen some red).
Some of the men dress in black suit with Bowler Hat !!
But bieng from Scotland I like the dress for showing Highland Ponies -
the Kilt !!

I'd like to show at Townsend's in Pembroke NH (I need to check the
show schedule) and the Hopkinton NH fair in Sept. I'll just stay
local this year so as not to stress the filly out with a long trailer
ride.
