1902.0. "Water baby" by BRAT::FULTZ (DONNA FULTZ) Tue Jun 28 1994 12:04

We are having a water problem at our barn.

There is a horse who is out in the pasture that feels he
should swim in all the tubs in the pature.

The tubs are the rubber maid that are about 2 feet off the ground.

He also goes in the bath tubs.

Anyone have any ideas on how we can keep his feet out of the tubs?

    	Thanks

You could try elevating the tubs - use some cement blocks to create a platform
that is too high for him to step into.

Has this behavior just started since the hot weather began? Maybe he is
overheating, or is trying to get away from the bugs. Do you have a shady area in
your pastures?

...just a thought...

No, he loves the water, go on a trail with him and you have to watch
    he doesn't roll in a puddle .

I am afraid of cinder blocks since they sometimes can become sharp

If you are afraid of cement blocks, try building a structure out of
4x4's and plywood that will raise the tub above his stepping reach.

I used to have a QH mare who loved water, too. Go near her with a hose
and she'd follow you around until you sprayed her, backing right into
the stream and turning all around so you'd get both sides. The pasture
she was in had a small pond in it, and she used to go in constantly
(it wasn't deep enough for her to actually swim in) and roll. I never
saw any harm in it, and she certainly stayed cool in the summers.
Consider yourself lucky to have a horse who will cross water willingly
on trails, I've ridden with many people whose horses were really
obnoxious about balking at the idea!

You can also try a 55 gallon plastic drum. I see them for sale
at tack/hardware stores. They are about 4ft high. While the
horses would still be able to easily reach down into them and drink,
they would be less apt to play in it.
