Did anyone else go to the Attitash Equine Festival last week? I went Sunday and the rides were impressive! Here are the results as best as I could remember: Our own Kate Choppe of Mass., rode 2 horses in the $5000 Hall of fame Amateur-Owner Jumping Classic. She had a knock down on the LAST jump on Come Back, and a Knock down on jump 4 on Hearsay. But her rides were right up there with the competition. Only 17 out of 35 riders went clean the first round. There were 18 riders in the $5000 American Express Adult Amateur Jumper class. Number 1 fell at fence two for an elimination. Rider 2 forgot the last three fences and had a major time penalty by the time she realized the error. Rider 3 took a NASTY fall at fence three and had to lay there for a moment to catch his breath. The horse refused the jump at the last moment and crashed through it. The rider landed on the horse's neck and seemed to recover until the horse decided to do a little piroette (sp). I think only 6 out of 18 riders went clear on the first round. Can someone explain why the ADULT fences were LOWER than the JUNIOR fences ??? T

Highlites: Hanovarians seem to be the horse of choice this year. Peter Leone rode 3's & 7's, a QUARTER HORSE to tenth place. Watch out jumping world, the American horses are breaking through! When will we see Appy's and Paints? Mark Leone rode a Hanovarian stallion who "bucked" the whole course both rounds! He bucked after each jump, like he was trying to kick the fences after the jump. Or he was saying "look at me I am cool!". It was a riot! Margie Goldstein scratched Daydream after knocking several fences. Don't know if the horse was lame, or if she realized at that point there was no way this horse would make the second round. Hugh Much scratched S&L Ballet after practically crashing through the triple and several other fences. Horse seemed very tired. Buddy Brown rode Charlebois, an 18 year old TB to fifth place. Goes to show you that the older horses can still compete! Alberto Carmona came all the way from Venezuela (sp) to compete! Margie Goldstein looked like she was going to clean up the joint on La Costa. Her horse was running fast and furious. The crowd was screaming with anticipation! He had alot of zip, but too bad she pooped out! They swung too wide at fence 5 (out of 7) in the second round. She could not recover and the horse crashed through the fence. Between first and second rounds, Margie had 5 horses to ride. She was on her eigth ride at this point and I think she was just simply tired. With 5 horses, who wouldn't be! But although she is my favorite, I was disappointed that she took on much more than she looked physically capable of. She is only 5'2" and under 130lbs I would guess, and although there is no question that she can handle these horses, when is it too much? T |
