I have a quarter horse aprox. 2 - 2 1/2 yrs old. I noticed the last hay I bought had fox tail type burrs in it. (after I fed part of the bail) 2 of my horses are okay, however my 2 year old keeps playing with his tongue and trying to rub his face on his water tank etc. Is this a sign that he has a burr in his mouth or does he have a loose tooth? If it is a burr, will he work it out or should I contact a vet? His appetite has not decreased, however I noticed he drools a little from one side of his mouth. I have tried to look inside his mouth however he has different ideas and it usally ends up in a fight. I bought him because he was very sickly, he had colic twice in one night, Now, after 9 months, he is apox. 900 lbs and is 15 hands at his rump. Too much for one person to hold and look for burrs. I hate to ask for help, however I would like to hear if anyone has had a similar experience and what are any "tricks of the trade" I may try. Thanks! Karen

He's about the right age to be losing caps. But, if he's drooling a lot that _could_ indicate something stuck in the gum. Best bet would be to have a vet look at it to make sure. Sometimes caps flip back into the palette and don't come out clean, in which case the vet can just pull it out. The only trick I can think of for you is to offer him a large carrot or apple, make him grab it in his front teeth, and while he's trying to bite through that, take a quick peek around. This will also teach him that he gets a reward for letting you poke around in his mouth. | |||||

Yes, I tried the ole carrot trick.... when I gave it to him you would have thought I put poop in his mouth. He made his stud face and carried on like a ding dong.... which by the way allowed me to look in his mouth, he had 3 or 4 fox tails stuck in his lower gum. I pulled them out as he is good as ever. This is a silly problem but he is like a kid. Thanks for your help |
