1779.0. "Andalusian Horses in Spain" by PAULUS::GUERCAN () Tue Jul 27 1993 12:51

Hi together,

I intend to spend my next holidays in Spain. Apart from
thoroughbreds I'm a real fan of Andalusian horses and
I'd like to learn to know Andalusians during these
holidays.

Does anybody know addresses of good stables, riding-
schools, stud-farms etc. in Spain, or similar places which
one should have seen?

Since you wrote "holidays" rather than "vacation", I'm assuming you're in
the UK. So, inthe event that none of us can help with specific
information, perhaps this indirect lead will be of interest.

In one of our American magazines(Dressage and CT), there was a recent
article by a California woman who went to England on her vacation to
ride with Lady Silvia Loch, a dressage and Andalusian enthusiast.

The article described her visit with Lady Silvia and a jaunt with Lady
Silvia to Spain & Portugal to visit riding academies and studs.

While I will gladly look up the article and type in places mentioned
therein, perhaps a letter to Lady Silvia Loch would provide even better
results. Sorry, I haven't her address but I imagine she wouldn't be
hard to find being something of a public figure.

Hi,

thanks for your lead, I will have a look for the address of
this Lady Silvia. Maybe anybody else reading this note has
her address? And I would be very interested in the
article you've mentioned.

By the way - I'm not in the UK but in Frankfurt/Germany, I
believe my English sounds quite funny :~}

According to the article, Lady Silvia Loch's address is:
    	Lady Silvia Loch
    	Cornard Tye House
    	Sudbury,
        Suffolk Co10 0QA England.

There is also a list of ther addresses of breeders etc. I will be glad
to send you a copy of the article(it's about 7 pages). Hope your
Spanish and/or Portugese are as good as your English(which is far
better than my German! Your English is pretty good if I mistook you for
British.) Send me an address and I will send the article via U.S.
    Postal Service.

Places mentioned in the article include:
Portugese Riding School(equestrian academy of the old royal court)
Alter Real Stud ... Both presumably near Lisbon

Centro Equestra da Lezira, a riding school at Vila Franca

This farm is the home of Novilheiro, the Lusitano showjumper that
John Whitaker rode at an international level about 10 years ago.

Equipagem de Santo Huberto in Santo Estevo.

    Major equestrian events are
Feira Agricola de Santarem (Agricultural Fair of Santarem) in June
Feira de Golega (Golega Fair) in Novemeber

Thanks but I can't take credit for anything except remembering it
    and mailing it. ;-)

While I was on vacation, I saw a TV show that mentioned the Spanish royal
riding school and its program of training Andalusians. I taped it and
will post the address as soon as I remember to look it up.

hi,

back from Andalusia now. it was a great trip.

i promised to tell you about the spanish horses (please
excuse my bad english), you see lots of them in Andalusia -
of course in very different conditions. there are horses
which are really bad treated, thin and with marks caused by
bad saddles etc. but in general the horses look good, even
if you can often see injuries on the nose and scars on the
feet because of chains.

fortunately, you can see the opposite as well - great
andalusian horses, being trained very well. i made the
experience that these horses seem to be much more intelligent
and learn more easily. nearly every andalusian horse i've seen
was able to go high dressage exercises. i met a 3 years old
stallion which could go these exercises completely free -
without a rider and even without a halter. he was about 5 times
under the saddle until then.

the royal equestrian school in Jerez de la Frontera was an
adventure as well. i couldn't see enough of those horses.

if somebody is interested to visit Andalusia, i have one really
great address. if you are ever in Spain and you love horses you
MUST go there. the four stallions there are the prototype of
the great andalusian horse, trained perfectly, but of course
they can't be ridden by a beginner.

for horse people Andalusia is really an adventure. horses overall.
i was lucky that there were some ferias to that time, these are
festivals where everbody who's got a horse (and there are many)
rides around, with beautiful flamenco clothes and often with three
children on the horse etc.

you can contact me if you need an address.

Could I have address information please?
I was in Spain last week in that region, and I would have *loved*
to have gone to see the Royal Equestrian School...I wish I'd seen this
note 2 weeks earlier!!! I'd like the address for next time...

Many thanks

hi,

here they are:

Real Escuela Andaluza del Arte Ecuestre
Jerez de la Frontera

(near Bodega Sandeman)

shows are every thursday at 12:00, other days you can visit
the stables or attend the training from 11:00 to 1:00.

the other address i can give you is a private finca, people are
germans (they speak spanish of course and english). horses there
are 4 stallions, 1 mare, it's really an adventure just to be there
and look at the stallions being ridden and to ride them yourself
(it's a strange feeling because they are on very high level of
dressage)...

about 4 guest rooms available.

About a month ago, I saw a short piece about La Real Escuela Andaluza
del Arte Ecuestre(The Royal Andalusian School of the Equestrian Art) on
TV. They mentioned that a similar school was being founded here in the
    US(in Dallas Texas).

In the same piece, they mentioned that the international championships
were sometimes held in the US and that there were free seminars on
judging Andalusian conformation etc in the "methodical Spanish style"

The address they gave for further information was:

IAHA (International Andalusian Horse Assoc? I presume.)
    	1201 South Main
    	Suite D-7
Boerne Texas 78006	(That's pronounced Burr Knee)
