1778.1 | Yellow Pages? | DECWET::JDADDAMIO | Seattle Rain Festival: 1/1-12/31 | Mon Jul 26 1993 15:00 | 13 |
| One way to find an answer to Question #1(How much to charge) is through
the phone book! I just took a quick look in the Seattle Yellow Pages
and found several places that rent videocameras. If you look in you're
local equivalent, you're likely to find some places that rents
videocameras.
You could rent the model you're thinking of buying from them and:
1) evaluate the camera before you buy one.
2) check out their prices and terms for getting damages if lost,
broken stolen etc.
That would give you an idea of what the top price is anyway. You can
set you're rates accordingly if you decide to rent out your new camera.

I have a friend who does this for people. In fact, she videotapes my
lessons for me and she does others at the barn for a very reasonable
price.

1778.3 | videocamera person's time would have to be cheap | ADSERV::HOOT::WILPOLT | | Tue Jul 27 1993 12:51 | 21 |
| Mary,
What does she charge you, if anything?
One complication of either hiring someone to do this,
or in providing that service to others, is that it
requires 'dedicated time' of the videotape person.
For example, I doubt that she would want to accompany
me all over New England to tape horses that I am considering
buying. (But I am grateful that some of my friends are willing
to do so!!) Similarly, I'm happy to videotape my friends or
others at nearby facilities, but for something like a horse
show, it's more convenient just to let the folks take the
machine.
(It's possible to get sellers of horses to send videotapes,
but often they are too frustrated by the number of tapes they
have to send out, the limited response they get from doing so,
and the loss of all the tapes that aren't returned! )

1778.4 | Going rates for rentals... and deposits. | ADSERV::HOOT::WILPOLT | | Tue Jul 27 1993 13:54 | 29 |

Just to follow up on the video-camera rental info...
I called a few places that rent camcorders or videocameras.
Rates seem to be from $20 to $35 per day, $30 to $65 for a
weekend, $80 to $100 for a week. The places I called
require a $400 or $500 deposit. None of the 4 places I
called had top-of-the-line equipment like the one I
borrowed... but they sounded like they'd be OK for outdoor
filming within a medium-sized arena. They all recorded
on VHS tapes, which is sometimes an advantage, though I
am getting addicted to the newer camcorders' picture quality!
Most places charged more for weekend use.
I was disappointed that the sales place I called didn't
have any arrangements for 'trial' usage of the newer equipment,
even if you were planning to buy, though they did rent the
older equipment. But then, I didn't call more than one sales place.
If I were to rent equipment out, and asked for a big check as a
deposit, is there anything to calm my fears that the person
might not even have that much $$ in their account? I pretty
much trust that people wouldn't steal the equipment, but I'd
hate to have to work to recover the money if the machine got
stomped on and they didn't actually have the money.

1778.8 | Thanks Mary | MR4DEC::LPIERCE | HELLO....AGAIN | Mon Aug 02 1993 13:44 | 16 |

Thanks Mary!
I am the one Mary was talking about. I was going to start a
business w/ a freind. It was my idea. We video all horses for
sale in New England and we rent you the vidoe's of horse for sale
for a small fee. (just like house shopping now) well, she got
the buyout from DEC and she decided to take my idea and run away
with it.
But I am still doing this on a smaller scale. I will go and
vidoe your lessons and I will go and vidoe your horse's for sale
so you can send buyers the tape... or I will go w/ you to vidoe
a horse you would like to buy.
