1771.0. "Loose horses....An Owners nightmare...." by POWDML::MANDILE (medium and messy) Fri Jul 16 1993 10:42

                    Every horseowners nightmare

What do you do when you go to the barn to bring in the horses,
and they are not in the paddock?

                       P A N I C !!!!!

Seems my 2 "kids" decided to take a stroll under the stars last
night. I went out to get them, and the open fence space said it
    all.
Of course, we couldn't find a working flashlight. ); (I'm closing
the barn door after the horses got out, but I'm buying some *serious*
    flashlights at lunchtime...)
My neighbor and his son joined in, and we tramped the woods.
    Nothing. It's now 1 am.....
I called the police, and no reports. They would send a cruiser
as soon as one was free.
Off in the car I went in one direction, and off in the truck hubby
    went in the other.
It's now 2 am.....Suddenly, they appear in front of my husband's
headlights, crossing the road. I turn around, and they were running
through a field of oats at the horse farm one street over. It would
be a field ready to harvest, wouldn't it? Anyway, 2 very excited
horses refuse to be caught, trampling the field and agitating the
owner's mare's, who are in the next field. Finally, by using one
of his horse's as bait, the owner & my hubby drove the 2 of them
towards me and the horse, where I was able to slap a halter on one.
Our apologies and offer to pay any damages were accepted, but even
though the owner was very p.o.'d, he refused compensation. It's
now 3 am, and we are walking the 1/2 mile home, followed by the
cruiser which had found us. No injuries apparent at this time,
thank goodness. It was one heck of a night........

    Glad they are ok!

Yes, it is a nightmare to go home and find your horses missing,
you wonder, are they dead on the road, did someone steal them,
    are they lost??? True panic.....

But you mentioned that the owner of the field was PO'D ???
Surely, he would understand having horses of his own. It's
not like you planned it for Pete's sake!! Have your horses
    done this previousely?

This is the first time they have gotten loose, and he did
understand, which is why he refused damage payment (I assume).

We must have chicken horses. The calves had taken down the outside
fence and strolled into the housing tract accross the street. (cows
make such a mess and leave a trial you could follow with your eyes
closed.) Our horse just seemed to stand there and stare at the
    opening.

I had a similar experience about 2 months ago. I came home from work to find my
neighbor walking down my driveway, with a strange pickup following him. As I
pulled in I was a little perturbed that my neighbor had been so presumptuous as
to be wandering around my property with strangers.......Well....did I change my
tune fast....

Apparently, around 3pm, my neighbor - just home from a night shift, was about to
jump in the shower and go to bed, when he looked out his front door to see my
two darlings peering in the door. He immediately went out and caught them -
fortunately they both had halters on. Well of course as many of us know, leading
two horses by hand, with no lead rope, can get interesting, and it did, if one
finds a reason to spook....

Neo (my TB) nearly ripped the man's arm out of the socket, and he let go of
Zeus (the sofa on 4 legs). They tore around the yard a few times, then
high-tailed it up the road towards Barre center (~5 miles away).

Well my neighbor - whom we have since named Uncle Mike - chased them on foot for
several hundred yards, 'til another saintly individual in a pick-up truck picked
him up and gave chase to the two bone-heads.... Well to make a long story short,
they eventually corralled them at another saintly person's farm and the owner
of the farm and my neighbor, led the children home 3.5 miles on foot, escorted
by the pickup truck.....Did I mention that traffic was stopped in both directions
for several miles while all of this was going on?

Well when I arrived home, it was 7pm and they had just deposited the two smiling
sweat-encrusted, worn shoed angels in their stalls. A four hour horror show -
involving my babies, and I was totally unaware, I just came home like every other
day, unknowingly involved in potential lawsuits, horse carnage, and a host of
other things I don't even want to think about....

Apparently - Zeus (the smart one) jiggled the latch on the gate to the pasture
open....

Well, needless to say we have since fenced in our entire property, including the
front yard, and we have installed a nice big gate at the end of the driveway.

We were lucky beyond belief.........I have the best neighbor in the WORLD!!! :-)

I would bring something over to the neighbor, that helped you
out.. (wine and cheese) It can be a nightmare having a neighbor
that doesn't like horses (take it from some who knows)

I am so glad you found them.

Actually we gave him a sizeable gift certificate to a nice restaurant in the
area. You are right I am very lucky to have a neighbor that likes horses. We
live in a small rural community in central Massachusetts and people really watch
out for each other on my street. It is great. Not to mention the fact that there
are about a dozen other small farms on my road.

Lot's of ponies :-)
