Hi all. I hope that some of you can shed some light for me. I have been taking English Riding Lessons for 5 months and during my lesson last week my instructor asked us to trot rise without strups. My horse is over 17hands and has a very long stride so when I attempted to do that I feel off...hit my head on the fences and was kicked in my leg and in my back. As you tell I'm little concerned about attempting this again and I wonder what was the whole purpose to doing this. Mindy

There are several reasons, one is for you to use your thigh/leg for control over your seat. Another is incase you lose your strups you can still control the horse. Iam sure there are others, but if your not ready for dropping your strups tell the instructor. | |||||

I think they do this because they enjoy torturing us students ;^). Actually, I don't mind as it really helped lengthen my leg, and improve my balance. I usually warm up now with standing in the stirup (forgive me I can't spel today and my office is in boxes), bringing my heels up behind the saddle, and posting w/out stirrups. |
