Folks, This weekend one of the mares belonging to the owner of our livery yard had an emergency blood transfusion. No blood typing or testing took place, yet the mare had 6 pints from an unrelated donor and lived. All that I have managed to find out is that this transfusion is a once off- and can't be repeated. I assume because of any reaction her natural immune system will have had to 'foreign' blood. Does any one know any more about blood tranfusions in horses ? Are there 'blood banks' ? I must admit to not being able to remember how much blood there is in a horses system. Was 6 pints a lot to remove from the donor ? My books aren't too helpful on this subject, maybe someone out there can provide some fodder for my enquiring mind. Judy P.S.
