1760.0. "gear for trail ride" by DPDMAI::LAWRIE () Wed Jun 23 1993 18:11

I am getting interested in "TRAIL" riding- sort of like the "endurance"
riding. I was wondering where to get some things to make life easier
on the overnight stays. I have a tent, or may convert the truck into a
camper top, but what have people done for the horse.

Currently I tie the rope to two trees and tie him to the rope. What
are other ideas-???. I saw a electric fence setup run from batteries,
but where can I get one cheap (of course with the poles and tape/wire)?

Also any ideas of carrying more stuff on the horse would be
appreciated. I ride English so the saddle bag idea didn't seem
appropriate, but I did get a pad for the saddle that allows some stuff
put it the pockets, but it looks very hot.

Any thoughts/ideas would be helpful. Thanks
    Bruce

I do this frequently, but not overnighters. Many rides offer stabling
either on the site or nearby. I know many people who do this also tow
with vans rather than trucks, for human convience. I have also seen
people using pipe corrals that seem to set up fairly easily but must
be awful heavy and ackward to cart around.

For on the trail, I ride with an all purpose saddle (although Im
looking at Wintec Endurance saddles now). They make small pouch type
packs specially designed to attach to the rings on the side of the
saddle. I know the saddle pads you mean, and they are quite heavy and
hot, and also cover a large area of the horses's back, which can slow
cooling. Most riders also carry a sponge attached to a long string to
dip in water crossing and cool the horse that way. I also sometimes
    wear a fanny pack.

Enjoy yourself, it's lots of fun!
