1757.0. "MY BABIES HAD THE "FLU"" by ISLNDS::GARROW () Wed Jun 16 1993 09:30

    About 3 weeks ago, my gelding was coughing quite a bit for about 4
    days, no discharge, just kind of a "something stuck in the throat"
    cough. Then about a week later my mare went off her feed, which is
    very unusual as my two eat like "horses". She became somewhat
    lethargic, so I kept an eye on her..I was in panic mode at firs
    thinking it was colic. You know, checking every few hours, all night
    long. By the third day, the vet came (I called him first thing Monday
    morning, but he didn't think it was anything to worry about yet). When
    he did come out on Wednesday, she had a temp of 104 and still wasn't
    eating....he gave her a shot of bute which brought the temp down and I
    gave her bute twice a day for about two days. She started to eat
    betters and it took 7 days before she was back to her normal spunky
    self.

    The vet said it was a "virus" or "flu". My horses haven't been near
    any other horses, but they got it anyway!!!! Seems there is something
    going around....not serious (at least for mine) but I guess if you're
    at a stable with many other horses it could be a nightmare!!!

    Anybody else have sick babies???

1757.1Where did I put the thermometer?SWAM2::MASSEY_VIIt's all in the cueWed Jun 16 1993 13:1212
    Now that you mention it...........

    One of our mares has been coughing a bit. I thought it was the new
    shipment of hay, it seemed finer than the other hay we have gotten. I
    guess I will take her temp tonight and see if she has a fever.

    Also, I remeber a vet telling me one time that some viruses will stay
    in the ground untill the right conditions will release the spores, just
    like pollen I guess. We had an outbreak of STrangles every year and
    the vet said the pasture probably carried it.

    A few weeks ago, Algiers was coughing a bit like he had dust. It
    happened when we were warming up, off and on for a week or 2. It was
    so bad one night that I got off him and loosened his girth, took him
    back to his stall and watched him. It cleared up eventually by itself.

    And just the other night, someone else's horse was coughing the same
    way. I think she said it had been happening for a couple days.

1757.3could it be pollen?ALFA1::COOKChips R UsFri Jun 18 1993 11:5614
    I wonder if the air quality (pollen-laden) could be bothering them?
    We've also had some coughing in our barn...just dry coughs like dust
    from the paddock was bothering them. Or, in our case, could it be
    that the little turkeys beat it out to the sand paddock and flop down
    and roll in the sand as soon as I let them out in the morning? You
    should see 9 horses out there with half of them on their backs with
    their feet in the air and the other half waiting their turn. I'd
    cough too from all the dust they stir up!

    But, seriously, the pollen is really thick right now. I used to have
    a black car, now it's a lovely shade of yellow.

1757.4who knows?CARTUN::MISTOVICHdepraved soulFri Jun 18 1993 14:214
    Possibly, although Algiers had the problem a 6+ weeks ago and has been
    fine for 3+ weeks, and the other horse just started this week.

1757.5How long does it take to clear up??IRNBRU::MICHELLE...dinosaur eat man,woman inherit the earthWed May 31 1995 10:4826
My horse has exactly the same condition as the base note and I was
wanting a bit of advice.

Shannon has a gone off her hard feed although she will still eat the
carrots and grass but when she does eat she started coughing as if
she has something stuck in her throat.

She was running a very slight temperature and no running nose BUT she
just so miserable it is heart breaking. I had the vet out a couple of
days ago and he gave her an antibiotic injection which is suppost
to last five days. I have not seen her today yet but she showed little
improvement yesterday and it is driving me nuts with worry.

How long do these thing take to clear up?

I guess I will know when she is feeling better but I read that on
no occasion should you ride a horse with a cough.

How long do I give her after she is better before riding? Two weeks,
Three weeks? Not having had a horse with a cough before what does
everyone think?

Thanks

Michelle
