1735.0. "Swimming horses as part of their fitness " by PEKING::KYNASTONW () Tue Apr 20 1993 07:27

    I am concidering taking my horse swimming in one of those Hydrotherapy
    pools at a yard near me.

    I have heard that swimming your horse can hep maintain their fitness
    and is supposed to be very good for them. Has anyone had any
    experiences of swimming their horse if so how may times did you go and
    did it maintain their fitness.

    I often take my horse to a local river that is about 3ft deep and I
    make it trot through a couple of times, as that can be good for them
    its a shame its not deep enough to actually swim him in,

    Any comments,

    Thanks in advance

    Wendy

    I watched a special on TV about horses & swimming. It showed
    the Hydrotherapy pool and the recovery of a horse who had been
    badly injured (broken leg, I think).
    Swimming is excellent exercise for anyone, as it puts less stress
    on the tendons, muscles etc. of the body.

    One of this month's magazines (in the U.S.) - U.S.C.T.A. News I think -
    had an article on swimming your horse as part of conditioning. I only
    glanced at the article but I seem to remember that Bruce Davidson now
    swims his horses as part of his training regime.

    Horses are not very efficient swimmers so swimming should only be done
    for a five or so minutes at a time. I have only gone swimming with my
    horse in the local lake on very hot days in the summer to keep us cool
    rather than fit. Once cool and wet my horse wanted to head to the bank
    where the grass was!
1735.3It seems to be working...............PEKING::KYNASTONWTue May 11 1993 04:4913
    Well I thought I would let you all know that I have now taken my horse
    swimming twice and it has really helped him alot. He appears to be
    sharper, as I have been told swimming is really good for their wind,
    also swimming seems to have suppled him up, as in my dressage tests I
    am not getting comments like "not really working from behind," and "A
    little stiff in his back and quarters" So wether this is due to I am
    schooling him better or both the swimming, but I would recommend it to
    anyone the only thing I would say is that you should really make sure
    you go to a proper hydrotherapy pool where there are professional
    people who swim the horses for you, and make sure that you put boots on
    them!
