1716.0. ""Horse Info Chart"" by DELNI::MANDILE (with an e) Tue Mar 09 1993 12:07

       Your input needed!

    I'm in the process of designing a "Horse Info Chart". This
    will be a plastic card that can be written on, that will be
    designed to hang next to or on a stall door, giving a run-down
    on the horse and it's needs. The card is erasable, so info
    can be changed at any time. I'm calling it a "Horse Info Chart",
    but if you have a better title.....(;

    What I have so far:

                         "Horse Info Chart"

          Horse's name:

          Owner:

          Owner Tel#:

          In case of emergency notify:

    Feed schedule:

    morning:

    evening:

    Worming schedule: (or maybe Last wormed: ?)

    Along with the "last wormed" info, have it include the type of wormer
    used, in case of a reaction.

    If you have barn help, you might also want to include some note of a
    particular horse's idiosyncrasies e.g., "don't turn out with blanket
    on", or "not in same paddock with so and so". Or "this guy bites".

    Something I've used for this sort of thing is the loose-leaf plastic
    pages designed to hold business cards. They hold 12 cards, I think,
    and I used the back of old business cards to record the sort of thing
    you are talking about for each horse. 1 card for farrier info, 1 card
    for feed info, etc. It's what I use for a feed chart on the inside of
    the feed bin lid, too. Easy to change the card for each horse without
    having to remove the whole chart. But I digress...8^)

    Dover Saddlery, and other places, have little metal holders for cards
    to go on stall doors. They are used a lot in breeding operations,
    where there are mares coming in and out all the time.

    Oh, another thing that's handy if you have barn help. New people can
    have a hard time remembering which horse is which, so a description of
    the horse can be helpful too.

    Course, these "cards" can turn into "books" if you don't watch out.

    But I found that the things most useful on the stall door were the
    "this horse is terrified of shavings bags" and "don't turn this guy out
    alone" info. The feed info I found more useful in the feedroom, since
    that's where you are when you measure it all out. Also, info about the
    owner, vet, etc, is most useful next to the phone.

    Change to:

	Feed schedule:
		Morning(  ):
		Middle (  ):
		Evening(  ):

    The time of day goes in the ()'s.
    A lot of barns do three meals a day,
    and feed hay in between besides.

    Something I only need when the horse is sick but then REALLY wish I had
    it is: Normal pulse, normal temp, normal resp.
    For my horse, or at least an average for any horse, so I don't have to
    run around and try to look it up in a panic...

    but then I guess you could turn it into a book if your not careful!

    That's why there is a section for NOTES: To list the idiosyncrasies (8

    I thought about the owner info....but "what if" it's an emergency
    and the owner's name & tel# is not accessable? It would be right
    there.....

    Last Wormed:         Brand:      (good idea)

re: .2

We feed even more often - horses are fed 4 times/day
  8:00 am       hay + grain
~12:00 noon     hay
  5:00 pm       hay + grain
  8:00 pm       hay + grain

You may want to have 4-6 lines for feeding, and a few columns

    Something real good to keep by the phone: This horse is insured by
    ________ insurance agency. Their emergency 800 number is___________.
    Call them as soon as you've called the vet!

    A good thing to add for the worming info:

    	Next worming (date) with (product)

    And a note for barn help/groomers: this horse does/does not cross tie

    The "Horse Info Chart" was a big hit at the horsemen's faire
    Saturday! People kept coming to the booth to ask if they could
    get more, as they had x # of horses....they were free, but people
    liked them so much, they offered to buy them!

    They did come out pretty sharp, if I do say so myself! (8
