1700.0. "Horse Value?" by COOKIE::NIKKII::TRESEDER () Wed Jan 13 1993 19:47

I have a very nice National Show Horse that has been with a top professional
trainer for about 4 months. Some of his clients want to buy my horse and I
was wondering if anyone out there knows the value of a good equitation horse.
Here are some statistics:

Completely sound
NO bad habits
Safe for a child
Gelding
8 years old
Chestnut with four white socks
Registered Half Arabian, National Show Horse and Sweepstakes nominated
NSH District 7 -- 3 gaited Open Champion

                  Pleasure Driving top five
NSH District 6 -- Country Pleasure Champion

He has many other wins, but these are the biggest. He is now trained to do
equitation patterns.

Any help out there? I have no idea ...

Thanks,

Lori

1700.1For you, it's a seller's market!ALFA1::COOKChips R UsThu Jan 14 1993 11:5212
    I'm far from an authority, BUT, the horses that are getting sold
    now are exactly what you have! People are paying lots of money
    for NSH geldings who have been "equitated". If I were doing the
    price setting, I would say (gulp) $45,000. If anyone is left
    standing after they hear that, they probably can afford it.

    I know that at the Arabian Nationals last October, a horse with
    fewer wins than yours was sold for about that kind of money.

    Good luck!

    Yup. I would go for the 40,000 to 50,000 range.
1700.3Wish I could remember where I saw the adDELNI::MANDILEToepick!Thu Jan 14 1993 15:191
    Hmmm....than maybe the one I saw advertised for $8000 is a steal? (:
1700.4Really?COOKIE::NIKKII::TRESEDERThu Jan 14 1993 17:1710
Thanks for the responses! Wow ...

I knew the $8000 was low, because they offered me about twice that. I thought
that was kind of low too, but wasn't sure. Do you happen to have the name of
the horse that went for that kind of money? If I knew the horse, maybe I could
do some kind of comparison.

Thanks again!

1700.5Sounds like they still didn't offer you enoughDELNI::MANDILEToepick!Fri Jan 15 1993 09:152
    No, I don't remember where I read the ad, so I couldn't find
    it....sorry...

    If you mention a NSH gelding named Hucks Prowler V, then mention that
    he was sold for way more than $40K, what you eventually ask will sound
    like a steal. In my opinion, anyone offering you $8,000 thinks they're
    going to put something over on you. And in my further opinion, if
    someone is going to invest in all the expense of training and showing,
    with will my several orders of magnitude more than the purchase price,
    they can pay a good price for the animal.

    I hope it works out for you.

1700.7I know that horseCOOKIE::NIKKII::TRESEDERFri Jan 15 1993 11:4421
Thanks Gwen, These people offered me $15000. BUT, they have essentially
gotten to test drive him for about four months. They leased him from me
after National Show Horse Finals through US Nationals and now they want to
keep him through Junior Nationals. So, I guess that instead of throwing
their money away, they would like to buy him so that they can sell him and
recoup some of their losses.

I talked to Shiela Varian last night and asked her some genral questions
about the type of horse he is and she thought that the offer was low too ...

Late last year, I looked at replacing him if I did get an offer and you are
right. For the quality of horse he is, I was looking at spending about $8000
for a TWO YEAR OLD with NO training what so ever. And that didn't include
a sweepstakes nomination. I figured that after taxes, I would net less than
$8000 even on the $15000.

So, Huck's Prowler V was sold for over $40K? He is a nice horse ... mine is
not quite so nice, but in the same general ball park. He'll be top ten (around
6th) in a class where Huck's Prowler V will be Champion or Reserve ...
