7.1 | Who's the moderator? | DECWET::JDADDAMIO | Speak softly;Carry a BIG carrot! | Thu Dec 17 1992 13:39 | 9 |
| I can't find a better place for this question so I'll put it here.
The last I heard our moderators were Pat Leech and Ed Fultz.
Pat got laid off 2 purges ago. Since there were no announcements about
Pat being replaced after she left, I assume that left just Ed. But,
according to a note in CANINE, Ed got laid off last Friday.
So, who the heck's got mod privs around here? And how come there wasn't
any announcement that Ed was leaving?

Shouldn't there be more than one person with Mod Privs?? And
how come there's no NOTED::SYSTEM access?? What happens if
the node crashes and system support can't even access this
notesfile??

| If you do SHOW MOD, Ed is still listed as the only moderator. That DOES pose
a problem if he has left, as he would be the only one with the
priviledges to add a new moderator. I was surprised to see Kiirja not
listed....has she gone, too? I would be willing to take it back with a
co-moderator, I didn't mind doing it before but I do not have the time
to be the sole mod, and as Sherry said, there should be more than one
at all times.

| Well, I contacted the NOTED system manager and have been reistated
with moderator privileges for now, to keep it going, I was told that
if no one took it on shortly it would shut down.
I will continue with it until someone else either volunteers to do it
or tells me they do not wish me to do so. If anyone is interested in
co-moderating, please contact me off-line, it is not a good idea to
have only one around, as I am very busy and frequently offsite and
unable to access the files.

I would like to clear up some mis-conceptions.
1) I did not set Topic Three to be No Write, it was already that
way when I was made moderator and had returned from vacation
two days ago.
2) I had many conversations with Ed Fultz, and he knew very well
how I (and others) felt about how he was handling the file.
3) Any notes we posted that made those feelings public here in the
notes file were deleted.
4) You never asked for an any answers in your very angry mail
message to me, so I did not feel it required any answer.
Furthermore your statement to me
"Be careful of what you say in the notes files since, you are now
co moderator - YOU will have to keep you YOUR opinions out of it.."
is out of line.

I did not delete any notes. I moved several notes in order
that you could post some replies, since you were so upset
about not being able to reply to topic 3.
You are free to delete your own notes.
Each noter is able to delete their own notes unless they
have changed nodes.

The last reply is .47 and the replies are chronologically correct
so I think that for some reason the last reply was numbered .47 instead
of .44 as it should have been. I don't think there are any replies
missing. If you recently posted a horse for sale, then check the
replies to 150.

| You may or may not still be seeing the UNSEEN map
problems. You may or may not also see "File Not Found"
errors.
Over the next couple of days access time is expected to
get worse for a short period of time while the disk is
being rebuilt.
Short Explanation: It is a software bug with NOTES.
Best advice is to keep trying if you get "File Not Found".
The UNSEEN map problem should go away.
Long Explanation: NOTED:: is actually a cluster of
three nodes. One of the nodes is an ALPHA machine. The
ALPHA (basically unreleased) NOTES software has a bug
with the unseen map. That bug has been fixed and the
patch applied. However, the system manager wants to
rebuild the system disk to be safe. While the system
disk is being rebuilt, access will be through the VAX
machines and hence much slower.
The "File Not Found" error is a new bug and being looked at
by the NOTES developers.
Thanks for your patience.

Thanks for doing the research on this. I wouldn't have had

The mods will talk it over and see if what seems reasonable

It is my understanding that the "seen" and "unseen" are controlled by
the individual Notes Notebooks. That is why this is not an easy
solution.

7.31 | Topics index problems | DECWET::JDADDAMIO | Seattle Rain Festival: 1/1-12/31 | Tue Feb 22 1994 20:01 | 13 |
| You may have noticed that Note 4(the Topics Index) has been behaving
strangely lately...but then again you may not...
Anyway, the batch jobs that creates the index have been having troubles
completing in recent weeks. The reason seems to be that NOTED has
network loading(actually, over-loading!) problems and disconnects
before the first batch job completes. That results in lots of empty
topic indexes which the second batch jobs puts in Note 4....
I'm working on a solution but in the meanwhile I'm just rerunning the
job when I catch the failure
Yes, we're still looking into the alternatives for an on-line index..

7.32 | New keywords, etc | DECWET::JDADDAMIO | Seattle Rain Festival: 1/1-12/31 | Fri Jul 08 1994 15:04 | 45 |
| Hi Gang,
In the year or so that I've been one of the mods here, I was repeatedly
finding that topics I *knew* were in the conference were being started over.
But, when I looked for the notes in the topics index, I couldn't find them.
For example, someone wanted info about the French Cavalry School at Saumur
and started a new topic to request info. I knew that Ellie Roberts had gone
there the year before and that there was already a topic...but I couldn't
find it in the index because the note had no keywords assigned to it.
This happened several times before I caught on. I'm a little slow
sometimes! ;-) Duh, dere mus be *lotsa* notes wid no keywords. Gee,
no wunner we can't fine nuttin.
So, for the past few weeks, I've been going through the conference searching
out notes with no keywords. I got done yesterday and added keywords to most
of those notes that had none and added appropriate keywords to many other
notes. In that process, I also created a few new keywords that were necessary.
Those new keywords and the "missing" notes should appear in next week's topics
index(Note 4). Of course, you can do DIR/KEY=FUNGUS (for example) if you just
can't wait till Monday. ;-)
The keywords I created are:
BARREL_RACING
DIRECTIONS - Directions to shows, equestrian centers, farms, etc
FIRST_AID
FUNGUS
HOLIDAYS - In the American sense of a day on which custom or law requires
cessation of general business rather than the British of vacation.
KIDS_&_HORSES
MASSAGE
MUSIC_&_RIDING
NAMES - Help with naming farms, horses, etc(even your kids if you want)
POLE_BENDING
RIDING_TIME - A couple discussions of fitting riding time into one's life
TEAM_PENNING
I doubt that I've got everything that goes in those categories tagged with
the keyword. So, if you find a note that you think should have one of those
or any other keyword on it, please send mail.
Thanks
John

You can also express your opinions here...as I am about to do...
I don't see the advantage of this action. If Note 10 is too bulky to
search people will simply repost questions that have previously been
discussed. What's the diff whether they repeat questions in Note 10 or
Note 11? If people are inclined to search for a previous discussion,
why make them search 2 topics?...
I don't necessarily dissent from the other mods. I just don't see any
advantage to doing this. If you have an opinion please express it.

up the dressage note 10 into separate sub-categories, it won't help
much to find information to start another general dressage note.

"Some folk may not know that you can search an individual note and its
replies for a title, author, etc:.
For example:
Notes> Dir/Title="collection" 10.* "
Yes, but that's fairly ineffective because many of us don't put
descriptive titles on our notes. For example, I am particularly
guilty of this. I frequently type "ex" when prompted for a title
out of habit from using EDIT in VMS mail so much(The way I have my
mail parameters set up, I have to type "ex" to finish the message).
I've also been known to put what I think are "witty" titles on
notes.
One can use the SEARCH command to find all mentions of a string:
SEARCH/NOTE=10.* "collection"
This, however, can be tedious....
Re 7.35
"if the split was to break out topics, that might be different but
just for "size" doesn't make sense to me."
7.38 "Unless someone undertakes to split
up the dressage note 10 into separate sub-categories, it won't help
much to find information to start another general dressage note."
Kiirja and I suggested splitting the dressage topic into subtopics a
couple years ago. There were 2 problems:
1. People didn't want to have to decide which was the
appropriate dressage sub-topic/note for a question
2. Many existing replies actually discuss several different
topics.
7.36 Compromise ?
The only thing I can think of which would keep the dressage discussion in
one note *and* make it easy to locate past discussions is this:
1. Make up new keywords(e.g. COLLECTION, SHOULDER_IN, etc)
Maybe DRESSAGE_COLLECTION so you can do a SHOW KEYWORDS
and find all the dressage related keywords together?
2. Add all appropriate keywords to each reply in Note 10
3. Modify the monthly topic index update to produce topic
listings for keywords on replies in Note 10. Currently,
it only looks at keywords on base notes...
If we do that, people could use a command like:
DIR/KEYWORD=DRESSAGE_COLLECTION 10.*
to find all replies in Note 10 which talk about collection.
However, this would require a *lot* of time to read each reply and
add appropriate keywords. Unfortunately, I think most of the work
would have to be done by the mods because many of the people have
changed email addresses(which means they can't modify their own
notes) or have left the company. I'd be glad to make up the keywords but
reading 1150 notes is going to take a lot of time that I don't
really have right now.
