1677.0. "Washington International Horse Show" by BUSY::MANDILE (In god we trust. All others pay cash!) Wed Nov 04 1992 09:19

I caught a good part of the Washington International Horse
Show on either ESPN or SC last night.

            WOW!

I want that Andulusian Stallion that performed with nothing but
    a rope around his neck!

I'd take one of those draft horses, too!

The miniature horse didn't thrill me, tho'.

The Gamblers Choice jumping was fantastic! Some very talented young
horses are making themselves a name. I wouldn't say no to any of them,
    either!

My trainer has one of the 30 horses in the country that qualified for
the Second Year Green and Amateur Owner divisions. They were seventh
(they give 10 ribbons in the Championships) in the Stakes class riding
against top trainers like Leslie Lenahan and Tommy Serio. Some local
riders, including Kim Kolloff and Lisa Tacconi rode well in the Marshall
and Sterling. My trainer said that there were many Massachusetts riders
in the ribbons which was really nice to see.

I liked the Andalusian display too but I was a little peeved that they
cut off the quadrille to show us "replays" from a year or two ago of
Bo Derek flouncing her hair around the arena .... That and the
constant "commercial" for the Leone brothers took some of the fun out
    of it...

For the die-hards, they are showing other competitions from the
International: President's Cup Grand Prix, Puissance and Dressage on
various sports stations throughout the week. If I'm not mistaken, the
Washington International Dressage is the ONLY Volvo World Cup-qualifier
in the US so don't miss it if you like dressage!

The Royal Dressage Festival (Port Jervis NY) held a 93 Volvo world cup
qualifier in May. NEDA held one at their fall show. I'm pretty sure
there have been numerous other ones too. (Devon?)

Oops, sorry for the misinformation there. That's what I get for
listening to the hype of TV announcers. I should have realized that
they were incorrect. I know the Volvo format well enough to know that
there is a series of qualifiers...Guess my brain was on vacation or
    something.

I caught the dressage broadcast last night. It turned out to be the Volvo
    World CUp's American League finals.

It was pretty interesting even though there were only 4 rides. I
thought that Carol Lavell and Gifted had a better Kur than at the
Olympics. Nobody else even came close to their performance. The commentary
was pretty poor though and included some pretty stupid comments. Hey, what
    do I expect for a $2 Pay-Per-View fee?
